MONROVIA: In the interest of promoting peace and industrial harmony, the management of ArcelorMittal Liberia and its Workers’ Union have reportedly reached a mutual agreement to resolve outstanding issues from the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that resulted into more than a week of strike action by the workers.
The issues were around demands for salary increments, salary disparities, and job grading. The report said on Monday, May 29, 2023, both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and agreed to a three percent salary increment for all union workers, retroactive as of August 1, 2021; and resolution of salary disparity and position grading issues within 30 days of the signing of the MOU.
According to our sources, the parties also agreed that all outstanding bonuses to workers will be settled by AML Management within 30 days from the signing of the MOU, retroactively as of August 1, 2023, based on the targets of production achieved.
In the interest of fostering peace, the ArcelorMittal Liberia management also agreed to revert and restore all deductions made from union workers’ salaries because of the striking workers staying away from work illegally and will also withdraw its appeal pending at the National Labor Court of Liberia.
The agreement was reached following a meeting facilitated by the Inter-Ministerial Committee, consisting of the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of State, the National Bureau of Concessions, the Ministry of Justice, and the United Workers Union of Liberia (UWUL).
