Two female legal luminaries, former Chief Justices Gloria Musu Scott and Frances Johnson Morris have vouched to defend Candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh in the legal battle challenging the Nimba result of the Midterm Senatorial Election, describing as fraudulent the process that had obtained in Nimba County on December 8, 2020; Stephen G. Cllr. Frances Morris, a former Chairperson of the National Election Commission, and former Maryland County Senator Glorial Musu Scott joined another legal luminaries, including Cllr Kuku Dorbor to defend Candidate Gongloe-Weh of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), who put up a legal battle to challenge the victory of Jeremiah Kpan Koung of the Movement for Democracy & Reconstruction (MDR) of Nimba Senator County Prince Y. Johnson.
The National Election Commission (NEC) announced that out of the total votes of 111,516 representing 100%, Jeremiah Kpan Koung of the MDR of Senator Prince Y. Johnson snatched 37,899 amounting to 36.12% while Edith Lianue Gongloe-Weh, of the CPP 34,153 which is equivalent to 32.55%.
But the CPP candidate, Madam Gongloe-Weh, opposed and challenged the results by NEC which she said was marred by gross irregularities and frauds, taking the NEC to a legal forum at the NEC to prove her case.
Speaking during an ongoing hearing at the NEC National Headquarters Monday on 9th street Sinkor, the two former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Cllr Gloria Musu Scott and Cllr Frances Johnson-Morris who are representing the legal interest of Madam Gongloe-Weh described the outcome of the election in Nimba as embarrassing for the credibility of the NEC, and advised that the hearing be consummated with outmost transparency to protect the votes of the people of Nimba County.
They maintained that the votes accrued by the candidate of the CPP was allegedly compromised by local NEC officials and some County officials in favor of the MDR Candidate Mr. Jeremiah Kpan Koung.
Madame Edith Gongloe is currently represented at the hearing by cracked team of legal luminary Cllr Kuku Dorbor, joined by the two former Chief Justices amongst others, while the National Elections Commission was represented by lawyers from its Legal Department with Cllr. Boakai P. Harris presiding as hearing officer.
On Monday, December 28, a Bill of Information was filed before the Hearing officer of the National Election Commission (NEC), Cllr, Harris, by lawyers representing the opposition Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) Senatorial candidate Edith Gongloe Weh alleging gross irregularities and fraud characterizing the conduct of the December 8 Senatorial Election in Nimba County.
Gongloe Weh’s bill of information which claimed that the election was tampered with by the NEC representatives in the county in favor of Reprehensive Jeremiah Koung, and therefore prayed for relief to be granted Madam Weh and Party.
