LiMA Sends Scholars Abroad -Twenty-two Liberians begin maritime studies abroad

MONROVIA – The Liberia Maritime Authority’s decision to send 22 scholarship recipients to Ghana addresses a persistent national gap: specialized maritime expertise. The beneficiaries will study at the Regional Maritime University, gaining technical preparation linked to shipping, seafaring, port operations, safety and administration. For Liberia, which maintains a major international maritime presence, the investment connects registry prestige with greater Liberian participation in the sector. MONROVIA, LIBERIA — The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) announced the departure of 22 Liberian scholarship beneficiaries who are headed to the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana, where they will pursue maritime-related education and professional training.

The scholarship initiative forms part of LiMA’s broader commitment to strengthening human capital and developing a highly skilled Liberian workforce capable of contributing meaningfully to the country’s maritime sector.

The beneficiaries are expected to receive high-quality academic and technical training at RMU, one of the region’s leading institutions dedicated to maritime education and training. LiMA has previously emphasized the importance of maritime education in preparing young Liberians to assume greater responsibilities within the sector.

The beneficiaries were selected following a thorough vetting process conducted jointly with the Liberia office of the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).

Building Maritime Professionals

Speaking on the scholarship initiative, Joel Oscar Dickerson, Director of Training at the Liberia Maritime Authority, said the program represents an important investment in the future of Liberia’s maritime industry.

“This scholarship program is about investing in Liberians and preparing them with the knowledge, skills, and professional discipline required to compete and succeed in the maritime industry. These young men and women are not only going to school; they are preparing themselves to become future professionals and leaders within Liberia’s maritime ecosystem.” Dickerson further encouraged the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity and to remain focused on academic excellence, professional conduct, and service to country.

“Our expectation is that each beneficiary will return to Liberia with a strong sense of responsibility and a commitment to applying what they have learned for the advancement of our maritime sector. They carry with them not only the support of LiMA, but also the hopes and aspirations of Liberia.”

The Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Maritime Authority, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., said the scholarship initiative demonstrates LiMA’s determination to develop a new generation of Liberian maritime professionals.

“The future of Liberia’s maritime sector depends largely on the quality of people we prepare today. We must deliberately invest in education, professional training, and capacity building if Liberia is to maintain its position as a major maritime nation and ensure that Liberians increasingly occupy critical positions within the maritime ecosystem.”

Training For National Service

Commissioner Lighe added that LiMA views human-capital development as an essential component of strengthening Liberia’s maritime administration and expanding opportunities for Liberians.

“These scholarships are more than educational opportunities; they are an investment in Liberia’s future. We want to see Liberians equipped to take charge of the opportunities that exist within our maritime industry, both nationally and internationally. Our responsibility is to create the pathway, and we expect the beneficiaries to walk that pathway with excellence, integrity, and dedication.”

 The Commissioner has previously emphasized the importance of maritime education and training, including the need to equip the next generation with the skills and knowledge required to lead the maritime sector.

The 22 beneficiaries are expected to undergo specialized studies and training at RMU, gaining knowledge that can contribute to Liberia’s maritime administration, shipping, seafaring, port operations, maritime safety, and other related areas.

 LiMA says the initiative is consistent with its broader efforts to strengthen Liberia’s maritime sector through capacity building, professional development, international partnerships, and human-resource development.

The Authority believes that building a pool of qualified Liberian maritime professionals will not only strengthen the country’s domestic maritime capacity but also create opportunities for Liberians to participate more actively in the global maritime industry.

The scholarship beneficiaries have been encouraged to represent Liberia with distinction throughout their studies and to return home prepared to contribute to national development.
