MOF and partner conclude Sustainable, Inclusive Development workshop

In a joint effort to drive sustainable and inclusive development, the government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Finance and development Planning and the United Nations Development Programme UNDP have ended a one-day technical validation workshop and Development Pathway Dialogue on the Drivers of Sustainable and inclusive development or DoD study in Liberia.

Liberia 2023 and its partners have embarked on a Study on the Future Drivers of Sustainable and Inclusive Development (DoD Study).

Led by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the government of Liberia has shown strong ownership and leadership in this undertaking.

After the completion of the zero draft report and a revised draft, both of which received valuable input and feedback from key stakeholders including government entities, CSOs, NGOs, UN agencies, CPG, and other development partners, the zero draft has been refined to produce final drafts of two reports – the Thematic Analysis Report and Development Pathways report.

These reports aim to provide rigorous analysis, alongside the ARREST agenda, to inform the drafting of the National Development Plan and county agendas.

With the production of the final drafts, there was a need for technical validation and dialogue on the development pathway to create an acceptable report.

In line with the roadmap for finalizing the study, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) convened a final technical validation workshop and a Development Pathway dialogue on September 11, 2024.

The “Study on the Future Drivers of Sustainable and Inclusive Development in Liberia” (DoD) aims to identify the key factors that could shape Liberia’s trajectory towards inclusive and sustainable development.

The study investigates various sectors of the economy and society, focusing on intervention areas aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as human development, economic and social well-being, political and economic integration, governance, and resilience to stressors, shocks, and crises.

The study’s overarching goal is to identify current development constraints, opportunities, and entry points for transformative change.

It seeks to find catalytic drivers and pathways for socio-economic transformations that can bring about substantial shifts towards inclusive and sustainable development. The DoD study intends to present a comprehensive and practical document that can inform policy actions in different sectors of society and the economy.

Making his opening remarks, UNDP Resident Representative to Liberia, Mr. Anthony Ohemeng-Boamah, a.i thanked all partners, including the UN agency and local and international organizations, for their valuable input provided during the study.

Ohemeng- Boamah, a.i noted that it was necessary to reconvene and review what has been produced as a DoD final drift that is representing a cumulation of rigorous independent and objective analysis.

The UNDP Resident Representative, therefore, urged participants to review the reports, identify gaps, provide information, update what already exists, and share perspectives on the proposed pathway and recommendations from the findings.

He observed that the DoD study seeks to delineate the main factors that could shape Liberia’s trajectory toward inclusive and sustainable development.

He explained that the objectives of the study include, identifying current and potential drivers of development in Liberia across various thematic pillars. Outlining significant challenges that hinder progress within each thematic pillar, examining potential synergies, conflicts, and trade-offs that may arise in harnessing the drivers of growth and development, and exploring critical “entry points” or transformative strategies that can promote inclusive and sustainable development.

“This initiative is a response to the collective commitment of the government and partners to leverage and build upon the relevant lessons learned from the development and implementation of previous development plans and to lay the foundation and provide relevant inputs to the new development plan”.

In remarks, Deputy Minister for Budget at the Ministry of Finance, Ms. Tanneh Brunson, said the government of Liberia is optimistic that the workshop will contribute to the formulation of a robust and inclusive development plan that can drive sustainable growth and improve the overall well-being of the people of Liberia.

Madam Brunson thanked UNDP for leasing the process and commended all partners for the level of collaboration.

Let us not forget about the vulnerable people, women, children, and people with disabilities in this plan.

She said the study will play a crucial role in informing the upcoming phase of development planning for the national government and development partners.

Initiated at the request of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) of Liberia, with the support of financial and development partners, the study has been conducted by an independent firm, the Data-Pop Alliance.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hired the firm on behalf of the partners.

The study design and methodology were co-created with national and international experts, ensuring the reliability and credibility of the study findings and proposed pathways.

The workshop will also focus on co-creating viable options for implementing the agreed pathways through a prioritization process.

The event was followed by high-level discussions, presentations, and breakout group sessions to foster dialogue and collaboration.
