LP Supports Affirmative Action for Women -Adopts Gender balance policy

On April 13, 2021, the Liberty Party (LP) National Executive Committee (NEC) unanimously resolved to commit to the implementation of a gender balance policy. This policy will ensure that, going forward, all positions within the LP, both elected and appointed, shall be filled using a 50/50 balance of male and female.

In February 2021, shortly after the LP convention which elected a new corps of officers to the LP NEC, the LP NEC resolved to implement a similar policy of 50/50 balance of officers in the LP youth wing. This was the first step in a series of planned action to ensure gender parity within the LP.

LP under the Chairman of Musa Hassan Bility, is extremely excited for this resolution as it is a monumental next step in exhibiting LP’s support of the gender equity bill proffered by several leading Liberian women’s organizations and the current movement and momentum around women empowerment and inclusion in the Liberian political space. LP acknowledge the huge task ahead as we continue to recruit strong women to join LP. This decision by LP NEC will serve as a positive indicator to women wanting to get involved in politics, at all levels and signifies that LP is indeed serious about creating the space necessary to engender more women participation in politics and , ultimately nation building.

This intentional action is also exhibited in the recent appointment of five (5) women – Aumuo Abdallah Ebanks, Cyvette Gibson, Salamartu Duncan, Edith Gongloe-Weh and Prescillia Cooper-out of the ten (10) eminent persons position on the LP NEC. Other eminent persons appointed to the LP NEC include Kla Edward Toomey, J Byron Brown Sr, Teeko Y. Yorley, McCarthy Weh and Losene F. Bility.
