As the fight against waste and abuse of public resources becomes global issue of interest, a strong passionate plea has been issued for Liberia to maintain the tenure status of her Anti-Corruption Commission officials; which creates international recognition for her governance system.
Joining the global debate which is unique to every country, with Liberia being of no exception, a local interest group, Liberia Mass Communication Student Union said, the current debate that looks at the attraction of huge local and international supports; which could create employment opportunities for thousands of Liberians and others cannot come to reality; if this government does not prioritize the independence of it anti-graft institutions.
According to a press release issued by the local interest group coordinator, Prince Harrison, December of every year is globally observed as anti-corruption day and as such, Liberia needs to show concrete action to the entire world that she is prepared to fight corruption, void of internal and external influence.
The local interest group argues that reported plans by the 54 Legislature to ignore the tenure status of officials of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC), should be urgently reconsidered, on grounds that upholding of tenure has the ability to add more international value to the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) led government, and the entire country at large.
Harrison further sent an appeal to the Legislature to pass the much talked about Whistle blower Act; which protects individuals and institutions that provide sensitive information that could aid the fight against waste and abuse of public resources.
At the same time, the group has cautioned members of the 54 Legislature to urgently declare their asserts to the LACC, when they jointly resume next legislative sitting in January of next year-2019.
“We commend President George M. Weah for his recent mandate given to officials in his government to declare their assets to the LACC; which is a timely and nationalistic policy aimed at fighting waste and abuse in public governance.”
“Our recent survey conducted has allowed us to gather that such a nationalistic policy statement made by the Liberian leader, has the ability to restore public trust, and add more value to LACC’s activities, the group press release stated. Reports by Martin Blayon.
