H. Varney G. Sherman, along with several others, received special recognition for exceptional service, unwavering loyalty and transformative leadership that helped shape the fortunes of Liberia’s oldest contemporary ruling political institution.

Although the recognition extended to all honorees, the atmosphere steadily gravitated toward Sherman, as the occasion was widely viewed as a tribute not merely to an individual but to a statesman whose political journey has become inseparably woven into the history and evolution of the Unity Party over the past 21 years.

In moving words contained in the official citation, Unity Party Vice President for Operations Alexander A. Suah Sr., who read the citation during the reunion program, paid glowing tribute to Sherman’s enduring legacy as one of the party’s founding architects whose stewardship helped transform the Unity Party from a coalition of political organizations into one of Liberia’s most influential political institutions.

The citation stressed that the occasion was intended to celebrate not simply the man himself but “to honor a legacy.”

“We gather not just to celebrate a man but to honor a legacy,” the citation declared, drawing a standing ovation.

The citation explained that the recognition was rooted in Sherman’s pivotal role during one of the defining moments in the Unity Party’s history, when Liberia’s political landscape was being reshaped through cooperation rather than confrontation.

According to the citation, Sherman distinguished himself because “he saw the vision.”

“Cllr. Sherman saw the vision of our former President, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. It was a bold vision that three parties could come together as one for the good of Liberia.”

The citation stated that, at a time when many remained skeptical of such an ambitious political arrangement, Sherman never wavered.

“He believed in that vision when many doubted it. He believed in service when politics was about ‘me’ and not ‘we.'”

The reunion organizers said that conviction became one of the defining qualities that enabled Sherman to help transform the Unity Party into a united political movement capable of winning the confidence of the Liberian people.

Building The Foundation

The citation further praised Sherman for laying the organizational foundation that would sustain the Unity Party for years to come.

“Cllr. Sherman became the first Chairman of the Unity Party under that new political arrangement. And under his leadership, history was made.”

The citation credited Sherman with helping engineer one of the most significant political victories in the party’s existence.

Under the theme, “He Delivered Victory,” the statement declared:

“He is the first Chairman who gave Unity Party her second win.”

“More importantly, he led the first win as a new party of three: Unity Party, Liberia Action Party and Liberia Unification Party.”

According to the statement, that historic coalition, working under the leadership of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, fundamentally reshaped Liberian politics.

“That coalition… changed the political landscape of Liberia. It brought into the idea of a ‘new Unity’—unity of purpose, unity of parties, unity for nation-building.”

Sherman Accepts Honor

Responding to the recognition, an elated Sherman, dressed in a green suit symbolizing the official color of the ruling Unity Party, expressed profound gratitude to the organizers for honoring him and others for what he described as years of sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the party and Liberia’s democratic governance.

He told the mammoth gathering that the distinction ranked among the greatest honors any political leader could receive because it came from members of the very organization to which he had dedicated much of his political life.

“When, as a member of an organization, its membership decides to honor you, it is an honor that is incomparable to most other honors in a person’s lifetime,” Sherman declared.

He continued:

“For that reason and many others, I humbly accept the distinction as Father of the Re-Union Initiative of the Unity Party.”

While expressing appreciation for the recognition, Sherman quickly shifted his remarks from celebration to introspection, using the occasion to deliver what many observers considered a candid assessment of the ruling party’s present challenges and future responsibilities.

Warning Against Disenchantment

Sherman cautioned the Unity Party against allowing loyal partisans to become disenchanted after contributing significantly to the party’s electoral success.

Drawing from decades of political experience dating back to the former Liberia Action Party before the formation of the Unity Party, he said one of the greatest weaknesses confronting political organizations is their failure to sustain relationships with committed supporters after elections.

According to Sherman, many faithful partisans devote enormous time, energy and resources to ensuring electoral victory, only to feel neglected once political power has been attained.

“Politics is about interest, and so when a party wins, the members should be made to benefit from their labor,” he declared.

He urged the party to begin looking inward by placing committed members at the center of its decision-making process and ensuring that loyal supporters remain engaged in the governance process.

Sherman warned that political organizations which fail to appreciate and empower their grassroots structures risk weakening the very foundations upon which their electoral victories are built.

Calls For Sustainable Financing

Reflecting on his tenure as National Chairman, Sherman lamented that many of the major recommendations adopted during the Unity Party’s national convention in Ganta, Nimba County, remain unimplemented.

Among the unresolved issues, he identified sustainable financing as perhaps the party’s greatest institutional challenge.

According to Sherman, the absence of a dependable funding mechanism has consistently undermined the party’s capacity to function effectively between election cycles.

“That has been one of the reasons all my successors have not been successful,” he observed.

He argued that strengthening the party’s financial base should become a strategic priority if the Unity Party intends to remain politically competitive and organizationally vibrant.

Sherman further stressed that financial contributions to the party should not be viewed as optional gestures but as obligations that every committed partisan must willingly fulfill.

“Partisans should be compliant,” he emphasized.

Welcomes Returning Partisans

Sherman also commended former members who had become disenchanted, left the party and were now returning to its fold.

Accompanied by several members of his family, including his wife, he praised those re-engaging with the Unity Party for demonstrating sincerity, maturity and commitment to rebuilding the organization.

He encouraged returning members to help strengthen the party and restore it to even greater prominence in Liberia’s political landscape.

Tarpeh Praises Former Chairman

The presentation of Sherman’s award was elevated to the highest level of the party’s leadership when Unity Party National Chairman Rev. Dr. Luther Tarpeh mounted the podium to confer the honor personally.

Tarpeh praised one of his predecessors for his outstanding contributions to both the Unity Party and Liberia, while expressing confidence that the ruling party would remain in government for years to come because of its commitment to delivering tangible development.

“Let me seize this opportunity to thank one of the fathers of our great party, Cllr. Varney Sherman, for his services to our party and the people of Liberia over the years,” Tarpeh declared.

He continued:

“I must thank him for what he has done in the party, especially the level of encouragement he gave to our partisans, restoring hope in them at the time when things were not working.”

Tarpeh also appealed to former members who had left the party to return home.

“We want to continue to encourage our members who left the party to return home because nothing is like home. We are the only party that can work for the people, change the country, develop the country and unite the people,” he said, drawing loud applause from the audience.

Throughout the ceremony, speaker after speaker described Sherman as one of the Unity Party’s most enduring symbols of resilience, whose leadership helped preserve the organization through electoral victories, political setbacks and its eventual return to national leadership. Minister of Commerce and Industry Magdalene Ellen Dagoseh also paid tribute to Sherman and the other honorees, describing the recognition as a fitting acknowledgment of individuals whose sacrifices helped sustain the Unity Party through both difficult and successful periods.
