Preliminary results from Tuesday’s midterm senatorial elections point to a resounding victory for the Collaborating Political Parties’ Grand Cape Mount County senatorial candidate, Simeon Boima Taylor. According to latest provisional tally in our possession, Mr. Taylor beat his main rival, incumbent Senator Victor Watson, with a 5,401 to 2,622 margin, representing 51.39% of the total 10,506 ballots.
Coming close to the two arch rivals, Independent Candidate Mambu Sonii is said to have clinched 1,619 votes, while Sando Wayne (United People’s Party), Emerson Karmo (People’s Unification Party) and Independent Candidate Dr. Fodee Kromah got 570, 212 and 85 votes respectively.
Simeon Taylor’s provisional victory in Cape Mount comes against the backdrop of the Saturday, December 5, 2020 violence in Bambala Town, Porkpa District, where supporters of Senator Victor Watson reportedly burned two vehicle belonging to Mr. Taylor, as well as the house of Representative Bob Sheriff.
It can be recalled, Simeon Taylor lost to Victor Watson in a special Elections when they contested the vacant seat of deceased Senator Edward Dagoseh in 2019.
The Grand Cape Mount County provisional result now places the Collaborating Political Parties in strategic lead for the 15 senate seats up for grab.
Already, incumbent senator Abraham Darius Dillon is said to be comfortably leading his main rival, Montserrado County District #5 Representative Thomas Fallah. Provisional results from the Montserrado senate race point to Dillon beating Fallah in his own District #5 stronghold.
CPP’s Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence is also poised to defeat her main rival Gbezonghar Findley in Grand Bassa County, while former Defense Minister Brownie Samukai is reportedly overcoming in Lofa County.
Edith Gongloe-Weh is also reportedly leading in Nimba County, while CPP candidate Prince Moye is set to dethrone CDC’s Bong County candidate Senator Henry Yallah.
Pundits are saying that victory for the opposition CPP in Liberia’s topmost vote-rich regions – Montserrado, Lofa, Nimba, Bassa and Bong Counties, portends a tougher ride for the ruling CDC in the 2023 presidential and general elections.
