Boakai’s Signing of 2025 Budget will be Treasonous – CDC Declares -Recognizes Cllr. Fonati Koffa as Legitimate House Speaker

MONROVIA – Liberia’s largest opposition political, party, the Congress for Democratic Change, says any attempt by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to affix his signature to the 2025 National Budget which hearing is being illegally conducted against the December 6, 2024 Supreme Court ruling will be considered treasonous as it would be a subversion of the Constitution of Liberia and will be resisted by the Liberian people to the highest.

“As per the ruling of the Supreme Court, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa remains the Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, and we call on him not to even attempt to accept any call for him to resign. And any budget emanating from these illegal sittings, if President Boakai affixes his signature to such a budget, that would be treasonable because it will be a subversion of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia. It will be resisted by the Liberian people to the highest.

“This is a collective decision of the Congress for Democratic Change, and the CDC is united in its collective sense against the abuse of power by the Unity Party government. CDC is united, including the Standard Bearer and Political Leader of the CDC, former President George Manneh Weah,” remarked the Acting National Chairman of the CDC, Mr. Janga Kowo.

In a candid conversation with the Voice of America over the weekend, Chairman Kowo gave an overview of his party’s position on the ongoing legislative imbroglio that occasioned the illegal removal of Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa as Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, and the impact of some CDC lawmakers’ actions in escalating the crisis on Capitol Hill.

“The CDC has resolved to expel the Deputy Speaker Honorable Thomas Fallah. The CDC has also issued a strong condemnation of the Unity Party government for attempts to manipulate the Liberia political process by the misinterpretation of the recent Supreme Court decision on the illegal removal of the Speaker Honorable J. Fonati Koffa,” Chairman Janga Kowo stated unequivocally.

He said the CDC has uncompromising principles that its lawmakers are under strict constitutional obligation to follow, respective to the CDC bylaws and constitutions that demand party members and executives to always operate within the confines of VOA party mandate, most especially elected representatives on the CDC ticket.

“All CDC lawmakers are expected to conduct themselves within the confines of the CDC policy. In this case, the lawmakers, led by the Deputy Speaker have allowed themselves to be used by the sitting Unity Party government by working with the Unity Party government to undermine the rule of law.

“We want to send out a caveat to the government that the attempt to illegally remove the Speaker, even in the face of the ruling of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Liberia is totally reprehensible, and we reject it categorically. We want to state here emphatically that we still view Honorable J. Fonati Koffa as the legal Speaker of the 55th National Legislature of the Republic of Liberia,” Chairman Kowo said.

When questioned as to why the CDC waited until Speaker Koffa was removed from his elected position before they could come out with such a strong position, Chairman Kowo reminded the VOA that his party has taken several actions from the inception of the crisis to check its lawmakers from making decisions that will run contrary to the party’s mandate.

“We have been taking actions, if you follow all the releases from the CDC as of the very inception of this attempt to illegally remove the Speaker. I have said pointedly that the government was the chief mastermind of this plot to remove the Speaker in which some of our lawmakers have been enlisted. We have called on our lawmakers to desist, and we have been giving the Deputy Speaker and other lawmakers the opportunity to come back to support Speaker Koffa. But all those efforts fell on deaf ears. That’s why the Deputy Speaker has been expelled from the CDC, and we have given an ultimatum to other lawmakers of the CDC to return to status quo ante or we will be compelled to take similar actions against them,” Chairman Kowo reiterated.

Queried on the CDC chances of making a comeback in 2029 having lost the Speaker seat in the National Legislature, the CDC acting National Chairman said CDC has not lost the Speaker seat, especially when the Supreme Court had declared all sittings and actions of the majority bloc as ultra vires or out of their legal bounds.

“As per the ruling of the Supreme Court, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa remains the Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, and we call on him not to even attempt to accept any call for him to resign. And any budget emanating from these illegal sittings, and if President Boakai affixes his signature to such a budget, that would be treasonable because it will be a subversion of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia. It will be resisted by the Liberian people to the highest.

“This is a collective decision of the Congress for Democratic Change, and the CDC is united in its collective sense against the abuse of power by the Unity Party government. CDC is united, including the Standard Bearer and Political Leader of the CDC, former President George Manneh Weah,” Chairman Kowo stated emphatically.
