ANC Denounces Capitol Hill Coup -Says Koffa Removal Attempt Illegal, Unacceptable

MONROVIA – Opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC) has unequivocally condemned what it called illegal removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, an action it says blatantly disregards the established rules of the House of Representatives and violates the Constitution of Liberia.

The ANC said in a release issued over the weekend that while it acknowledges the majority bloc’s prerogative to change their leadership, it is imperative that such actions adhere strictly to the rule of law.

“Anything less is unacceptable,” the party said, also expressing expresses deep concern and disappointment over the Justice Minister’s misinterpretation of the Supreme Court’s opinion.

The party called the incident a stark reminder of the days when the principles of democracy in Liberia were undermined to serve the interests of those in power, regardless of the detrimental impact on the nation.

ANC said this hasty and unlawful takeover is a disheartening reflection of the current administration and poses a significant threat to investment opportunities, indicating that a nation cannot progress without a steadfast commitment to the rule of law.

“The orchestrated removal of the Speaker by the government does nothing to enhance its credibility; rather, it appears to be a mere exercise in settling political scores,” said the party which also expressed deep concern that an administration that rose to power with promises of rescuing Liberia is now engaging in actions that undermines the nation’s integrity.

“This mission, which we can only describe as reckless, must be denounced by all well-meaning Liberians,” said the ANC. “It underscores the urgent need for a balanced control of all three branches of government. Repeating the same mistakes will not yield different results.”

The party called call upon all citizens and stakeholders to join in denouncing these actions and to advocate for a governance system that truly upholds the rule of law and democratic principles.

“Together, we can work towards a brighter future for Liberia, one that is built on justice, transparency, and accountability,” it said.
