As Nimba County and the nation grieve over the irreparable passing of Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, condolence messages continue to pour in from every quarter of the Liberia society. Over the weekend, two of the country’s prominent politicians proffered heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families, the people of Nimba and the National Legislature, urging all to seek solace in this dark hour that has affected not only those with familial to the late Senator Johnson, but also the victims who did not have the opportunity to seek justice.
Weah consoles
Former President Weah for his part on November 28, 2024, offered his deepest condolences for Senator Johnson’s sudden passing.
“I offer my deepest condolences over the sudden passing of Senator Prince Y. Johnson, who reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday, November 28, 2024, here in Monrovia.
Liberia is bereaved; Nimba is bereaved; the Liberian Senate is bereaved. I extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and all those impacted by his passing. May his soul and those of all faithful departed rest in peace.
It can be recalled that the last Senator Johnson was highly instrumental in securing a win for Weah during the 2017 presidential and general elections that saw the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) widely trouncing the Unity Party. Surprisingly, Johnson failed to support the CDC in 2023, a major factor pundits believe contributed to the CDC losing out to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
Cummings Calls for Sober Reflection on Johnson’s complex legacy
Opposition politician Alexander B. Cummings also seized the occasion to extend sympathies to the bereaved family, the people of Nimba, the Senate and the nation at large.
Cummings, however, implored Liberians to use Senator Johnson’s death as a period of deep reflection of his life in general.
“This period is a reflection of his life in totality, a sober moment for both his loved ones to whom he was a hero and his victims who did not have the opportunity to get justice during his lifetime.
“May God console everyone grieving during this period and may God in His just and sovereign will, grant the peaceful repose to his soul,” Mr. Cummings said soberly in a position statement released immediately following the passing of the Nimba County political kingmaker.
