The former ruling National Patriotic Party(NPP) has concluded plans to hold its 7th Biennial Convention in Monrovia from December 6-10, 2021 after the venue of the event was changed twice, first from Gbarnga where it was originally planned and later for Kakata and finally Monrovia for what the party attributed to financial and other circumstances beyond its control.
The decision to change the venue of the convention was taken by the National Executive Committee of the party via a resolution dated November 29, 2021 explaining the necessity to change the venue and was communicated to the National Election Commission through a letter addressed to the Chairperson of the electoral umpire, Cllr. Davidetta Brown-Lassanah.
The resolution which was signed by the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and made public, copy of which was sent to The Analyst Newspaper read in part thus
“Whereas, the Buchanan NEC meeting reaffirmed the decision to go ahead with the Gbarnga Convention and at the Bassa NEC meeting, the Standard Bearer and the National Chairman in separate remarks pledge to support the convention with Ninety Thousands United States Dollars ($90,000.00) coming from the SB while Ten Thousands United States Dollars (10, 000,00) coming from the NC;
“Whereas, up to Saturday, November 27, 2021 (one week to the Convention) the full amount underwrite the cost of the convention was not place in the amount and because of other circumstances beyond our control to proceed with the convention in Gbarnga;
“Now therefore: it is hereby resolved by members of the National Executive Committee of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) that convention convened in Monrovia as scheduled (December 6- 10, 2021)”, .
In a letter sent to the National Election Commission to relate the body of the change of venue and signed by the National Secretary General Andrew Peters, the party wrote thus, “We write to forward to your office, resolution emanating from the National Executive Committee of the NPP for the change of venue of its 7th Biennial Convention which was slated to have been held in Gbarnga City, Bong County, from December 6-10, 2021, to Kakata City, Margibi County and will be announced later”
According to the resolution, the convention among other things will elect national officials for the next 4 years with the expiration of the tenure of the current leadership headed by Senator James P. Biney of Maryland County. The resolution said in keeping with the constitution of the party, elected officials can seek for re-election only once which by implication gives room to any of the incumbent to seek for reelection but up to press time there has been no information about any of them seeking reelection or the names of those vying for elected positions being made public.
The National Patriotic Party of former President Charles Ghankay Taylor was in the saddle of affairs of the country from 1997 when it won the presidential election until Mr. Taylor was forced out of power in 2003.Though out of power, but it has been very visible in the polity of the country winning seats in the national legislature in subsequent elections and presently its Standard Bearer Mrs. Jewel Howard Taylor is the Vice President of Liberia under a collaboration arrangement with the two other parties, the Congress for Democratic Change and the Liberia People’s Democratic Party (LPDP) when they formed the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and won the election in 2017.
