The Executive Director of the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE), Dr. Edward Lama Wonkeryor, has reaffirmed the Government of Liberia’s commitment to collaborating with the USAID TESTS Project, a program aimed at enhancing teachers’ education involving Liberia’s higher education institutions.

Speaking on behalf of the government, NCHE Executive Director Wonkeryor highlighted the Boakai administration’s dedication to addressing critical issues within the education sector and emphasized that the partnership with the USAID TESTS Project reflects the government’s determination to revitalize teacher training programs across Liberia’s tertiary institutions.

Dr. Wonkeryor expressed the government’s intent to leverage this partnership to strengthen faculty and leadership development, with a particular focus on early childhood and primary education.

These remarks were made during the opening session of the USAID TESTS Project, under the theme, “Faculty and Leadership Professional Development in Higher Education Teacher Training Institutions,” held in Ganta, Nimba County during the week.

He described the initiative as a significant step toward rebranding the educational landscape in the country, emphasizing its importance for the professional growth of educators.

“The demands of a rapidly changing global landscape make it vital for our institutions to cultivate adaptive leaders and skilled educators who can deliver high-quality education and inspire our youth,” he said.

The NCHE boss added: “By focusing on the professional development of faculty members and administrators, we are strengthening the foundation upon which our education system stands, aligning our vision with sustainable growth and global competitiveness. The teacher training initiatives under the USAID TESTS Project are critical to enhancing the capacity of our higher education institutions.”

He said it has long been a priority for NCHE to elevate the standard of teacher education across various programs, which aligns with our vision for a stronger education system in Liberia.

Dr. Wonkeryor further disclosed plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to engage the U.S. Government for additional support.

He noted the intention of his institution to extend the USAID TESTS Project’s benefits to other NCHE-affiliated institutions that were not initially included, underscoring the desire for broader participation in the program.

The event served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for enhancing teacher education and ensuring that Liberia’s future educators are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
