MONROVIA – With less than a week to the conduct of the long-awaited Lofa County by-election, Liberia’s vote-rich northern region is reportedly under political siege as Unity Party Standard Bearer, former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, along with an entourage that includes Montserrado County District # 10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah, is storming villages, hamlets, towns and cities as he crisscrosses Lofa County in a massive show of political strength to support his party’s senatorial Aspirant, Mr. Galakpai Kortimai.
According to a dispatch from Lofa, Ambassador Boakai and entourage received an overwhelming reception in the District of Salayea as thousands of citizens lined the roads from Beyan’s Town to Zorzor District to welcome JNB and aspirant Kortimai.
Following the reception at Beyan’s Town, the campaign rally moved on to Gorlu where Ambassador Boakai informed the cheering crowds that victory was in sight for the Senatorial seat of Lofa.
“At the town of Golowo, supporters for the candidate of the Unity Party turned the rally into a traditional event of reaffirmation and reconfirmation of support for Galakpai Kortimai behind closed doors in a traditional ceremony exclusively for decision makers,” the dispatch stated.
The political rally accordingly proceeded to Delimai and Socromu where folks had been waiting all day. There, Ambassador Boakai is said to have held a series of consultations and meetings, and later headed for Barwein and other parts before finally landing in Zorzor around 8 PM on Thursday, thus concluding 16 hours on the road for the 23rd of June.
Unveiling Kortimai
Upon their arrival at the historic city of Zorzor, the Unity Party Standard Bearer and entourage were received by a multitude of the citizenry in the City Center where Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai raised the hand of Galakpai Kortimai and presented him to the people of Lofa, urging them to vote for him.
The “Kolubah” effect
Noted for its deep-rooted traditional alignments, Lofa County was overwhelmed by the presence of Representative Yekeh Kolubah who used the campaign tour to assume his true traditional role as a leading member of the revered “Poro” society.
Engaging the youth of the county in series of meetings, lawmaker Kolubah would later appear decked in the traditional “Poro” regalia, escorted by the Country Devil (masquerade), as he led a train of revelers and supporters of the UP senatorial aspirant to the residence of Ambassador Boakai before the team could depart form Voinjama City.
The Lofa contenders
For the Lofa County senatorial race, Galakpai Kortimai of the Unity Party will be going up against independent candidate Momo Cyrus and Cllr. Joseph Jallah, who many believe is closely aligned with the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change. Others include independent candidates Madam Mariamu Fofana and George Samah, while Sumo Kupee is running on the People’s Unification Party (PUP) ticket.
