UL Faculty, Students Elated Over Dr. Maparyan’s Appointment -Urge Govt. to Support New UL President Administration
MONROVIA – Going by the mounting criticisms that erupted from diverse quarters when President Joseph Nyuma Boakai recently appointed Dr. Layli Philips Maparyan as the 16th President of the University of Liberia; especially given the usually high level of toxicity that accompanied campus activism for decades; coupled with the university staffs’ perennial clamoring for better welfare and infrastructural improvements at the nation’s oldest but most ramshackle tertiary institution, it was a actually a shocking but pleasant surprise when the leadership of the Student Unification Party (SUP) wholeheartedly welcomed Dr. Maparyan’s appointment.
Making its position known Wednesday, January 8, SUP declared its fullest support for Dr. Maparyan’s appointment, noting that while a change in leadership at the University of Liberia does not automatically guarantee transformation, the onus is on the Government of Liberia to allocate sufficient resources and the necessary support for administrative reforms to bring about the long-lasting change.
“Therefore, the Vanguard Student Unification Party welcomes the appointment of Dr. Layli Maparyan as the new President of the University of Liberia. As of now, SUP has scrutinized every finding of the Presidential Search Committee and concluded the party has found no law or policy that opposes the appointment of a non-alumnus to the presidency of the University of Liberia.
“SUP welcomes the appointment of UL President, Dr. Layli Maparyan and will appreciate her dedication to the improvement of the University. With this, we are also cognizant that the change in president does not automatically guarantee transformation, it’s the willingness of the government to allocate sufficient resources and necessary support for administrative reforms that bring change. However, since Dr. Maparyan is the agent of the Presidency of Liberia who has been entrusted with the authority to manage the affairs of the University, SUP will hold Dr. Maparyan accountable for any action of the State that undermines infrastructure and academic improvement at the University – SUP remains uncompromising on this position.
“SUP’s disagreement with people and institutions over the years is not based on color or race but instead on policy differences. SUP doesn’t see color or race but sees and opposes draconian policies and ills that affect society and its people; race should not determine the role of people in society, let’s look up to the policy. SUP, as a mass campus-based Student Revolutionary Party, has played a significant role in the collective mobilization of our people in the fight against colonialism, one-party state, and imperialism in Liberia and Africa.
“SUP believes that factors such as skin color, nationality, language, or tribal affiliations should not hamper anyone’s ability to participate and contribute to society, whether within Liberia or beyond its borders. When we’re confronting the concept of colonists, we identify them by their actions and interactions with us.
“The Vanguard Student Unification Party remains committed to advocating for the rights of students and masses of the people, against reactionary policies,” the SUP leadership said in a position statement Wednesday on the main campus of the University of Liberia.
UL Faculty Welcomes Dr. Maparyan’s Appointment
Meanwhile, the leadership of the University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Association (ULFASA) has congratulated Dr. Layli Philips Paparyan on her appointment as the 16th President of the University of Liberia by the President of the Republic of Liberia.
ULFASA also congratulated the University of Liberia Presidential Search Committee for conducting a rigorous search and vetting of various applicants through a transparent process that saw Dr. Maparyan emerge as the preferred candidate to oversee the UL at this time.
“The leadership of ULFASA notes the enormous task of becoming a UL Presidential, especially when the UL is faced with challenges that affect Faculty, Staff and Students. We acknowledge that navigating these challenges and instituting the necessary reforms require careful planning, insightful decision making and strategic implementation for the growth of our dear institution.
“In these times, ULFASA pledges her support to the new President and avails herself as a progressive partner in addressing the daunting challenges that have plagued the UL over time. ULFASA remains open to continuous engagements with all stakeholders in finding workable and long-term solutions to the most pressing issues affecting Faculty, Staff and Students.
“The leadership of ULFASA urges all members to remain calm as discussions are happening to resolve our welfare issues,” the UL faculty and staff leadership said in a press release issued January 7, 2024.
ULFASA/SUP make no mistake about that that the authoritarian wannabe fascist dictatorial despotic tyrannical regime of the no regard for the rule of law Joseph Boakai kleptocracy has absolutely no concern nor interest in addressing any challenges affecting faculty, staff, and students of the university.
And that is the primary and sole reason why
1. no one from within the administration of the university, nor any of the hundreds of thousands qualified and very suitable Liberia academics who are graduates of the university was appointed to succeed Dr. Nelson, but rather
2. the kleptocratic authoritarian tyranny of Joseph Boakai prefers an outsider who naturally lacks any emotional, objective, or reasonable sensation or feelings for any of the challenges affecting the faculty, staff and students of the university. Its as simple as that.
