Nimba By-Election Candidates Registration Ends -NEC Says It Hands Packages to 18 Contestants

MONROVIA – Liberia’s electoral management body, the National Elections Commission (NEC), over the weekend announced the closure of candidate nomination exercise for the conduct of the Nimba County District #5 representative by-election.

During a press conference held at the NEC headquarters on 9th Street Sinkor, the National Elections Commission Chairperson, Davidetta Browne Lansanah, said: “At the close of the nomination exercise, a total number of 11 packages have been returned to the National Elections Commission of Liberia to include 8 political parties and 3 independent aspirants.

The NEC boss further disclosed that out of 11 packages received by the Commission of the 11 submissions are 10 males and 1 female.

According to her, the Commission handed out a total of 18 candidate nomination packages to both political parties and independent aspirants to include 11 political parties and 7 independent aspirants.

She explained by saying, “Whether applying on a political party ticket or as an Independent, an applicant at this point is referred to as an aspirant. The person becomes a candidate after certification by the National Elections Commission. The first evidence of which shall be the appearance of his or her name on the provisional lists of candidates.”

Mrs. Lasannah said further:  “The Commission is pleased to informed you that it initially submitted to the government of Liberia a budget of USD$276,444.01 which after discussions was scaled down to 235,000.00 plus for the district #5 Representative bye-election,” she disclosed. “In keeping with the electoral key dates, the Commission would publish the provisional list of candidates on July 7, 2025.”

She added that the final lists of candidates for the bye-election will be published on July 21, 2025 to be followed on the same day with the official opening of the political campaign period for district #5 by-elections.

“Let me remind you that the 2025 Nimba County District 5 Representative By-elections day is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 August 2025,” she announced. “In keeping with our key electoral dates released for the Nimba bye-elections, the Commission will begins to release preliminary results on August 13, 2025, and will release the final results on August 15, 2025.”

On behalf of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission, Madam Browne Lansanah expressed thanks and appreciation to all members of the nomination team headed by legal head Cllr. Alvin T Jalloh.

“After providing this information, I, Davidetta Brone Lasanah, chairperson of the National Elections Commission, do hereby declare that the 2025 candidate nomination exercise for district #5 Representative Bye-election officially is closed with no extension,” she declared.

The Nimba County By-election is necessitated by vacancy created in the aftermath of the election of the former district #5 lawmaker Samuel G. Kogar to the Senate seat following the death of former Nimba County political godfather Prince Y Johnson.
