The Acting Executive Chairman of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) says that there is a need to re-establish ties with the civil society to assist in the fight against corruption as the National Civil Society Council pledges to take advantage of its branches all over the country to assist in pushing the agenda of the anti-graft commission around the country.
During a courtesy call at his Congo Town Office last week, Cllr. Gbala said partnership with the Civil Society of Liberia is part of the rebranding process of the LACC which allows for opening the Commission up to engage and work with civil society organizations in the country.
Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala made the assertion at his office when he received the President of the National Civil Society Council, Mrs. Lorretta Kai, who paid a courtesy call on him. The LACC boss explained that the institution will engage in discussions with the National Civil Society Council to assist through its advocacy role to reach out to the entire citizenry of the country.
Cllr. Gbala also informed Mrs. Kai about the progress made in submitting a Bill to establish a Corruption Court and other Acts to be repealed by the Legislature. He said that the Civil Society can play a pivotal role in having these legislations passed into law through engagements with their respective legislators.
In response, Mrs. Kai noted that civil society is a partner to government and urged that the two institutions should work together for sustainability. She said that her organization will be a key stakeholder in the fight against corruption, and expressed support to the LACC in this endeavor.
Mrs. Kai noted that while the LACC may not be decentralized, the National Civil Society Council which has branches all over the country, will assist in pushing the agenda of the LACC around the country.
She told the Acting LACC boss that the Commission should continue to hold regular consultations and dialogues not only with her organization; but with other government institutions to build relationships and strengthen partnership.
The meeting with the National Civil Society Council comes in several days of the Acting Executive Chairperson drive towards the process of re-branding the LACC. He has already met with the Press Union of Liberia, the Liberia CSO Anticorruption Coalition among other stakeholders, a press release issued by Edwin Clarke the Public Relations Manager of the LACC concluded.
