IOM Promises To Assist Liberia Address Huge Migrations Challenges

The Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration, (IOM) says her organization is here to work with the Liberian Government aimed at intensifying efforts to address the country’s migration challenges.
Madam FatouDialloNdiaye said the International Organization for Migration (IOM)wants to partner with Liberia in building the capacity of institutions that are concerned with migration issues in the country so as to ensure that they become stronger in dealing with situation regarding migration issues.
She made the statement when she met with Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, Cllr. Deweh Gray at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, Madam Ndiaye added the IOM looks forward to having its presence felt in Liberia by helping the country take concrete actions in securing its borders as it relates to illegal migration activities.
Madam Ndiaye also disclosed that the IOM is here to help Liberia in crafting migration policies as well as to engage the donor community in order to assist with funding geared toward strengthening IOM activities in Liberia.
The IOM Chief of Mission further assured Liberia that his organization has begun lobbying with the European Union and other donor partners to enable Liberia benefit from the EU-Trust Fund geared toward providing support to migration management issues in Africa.
For her part, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs Cllr. Deweh Gray lauded the IOM Chief of Mission for the many initiatives her institution is undertaking to help address some of the gaps in the migration situation in Liberia.
Deputy Minister Gray also revealed that the Liberian Government, through its relevant institutions such as the LRRRC, Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Liberian Immigration Services, (LIS) have been making reasonable strides in repatriating Liberians that are stranded in foreign countries back home.
She assured the IOM Chief of Mission of Liberia’s desire to collaborate with donor partners including the IOM in addressing challenges facing the Liberian community in Australia and other parts of the world, especially as it relates to their status in their host countries.
Madam Gray then noted that under Liberia’s Pro-Poor Agenda for Development and Prosperity, the Weah-led Government is exerting efforts aimed at providing the basic necessities and enabling environment that would encourage young people in Liberia to avoid traveling to other countries for survival.
