CDC Cracking Deeply? -Staunched Partisans Parting Ways from Coalition

MONROVIA – The quagmire that is characteristic of Liberian politics, and which particularly hunts and plagues opposition political parties whether they be former ruling establishments or not, is defections – the lack of fortitude on the part of members and allies to cleave on for long mainly after the loss of power. Having hit the True Whig Party, the National Democratic Party of Liberia, National Patriotic Party and even the Unity Party, the virus is now spreading over to the Coalition for Democratic Change. The other day, it was constituent National Patriotic Party which, ruined by internal disputes, withdrew from the CDC. Meanwhile, prominent members and lackeys of the party continue to walk away as did former Chairman Mulbah K. Morlu a few months ago. In 24 hours, two have tendered their resignations, begging the question of whether the CDC is cracking deeply? The Analyst reports.

Just in six months after its political fall, the erstwhile governing Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is finding it difficult to hold its center intact, as constituent members of the coalition and key partisans are walking out.

The latest who nearly simultaneously but individually announced their exit from the party are a longtime coordinator and executive, Rev. Festus R.B. Logan, who served without complaint for many years as the CDC Government’s Executive Director at the LRRRC and Women Wing Chaplain General, Mother Comfort Lloyd.

In a July 7, 2024 subject “Letter of Resignation and Suspension of Membership”, and addressed to Acting National Chairperson Augustus Jaga Kowo, Logan wrote: “This communication represents my formal resignation as National Chaplain General and the suspension of my membership from the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), effective immediately.”

Logan claimed he has chosen to resign and suspend his membership to fully commit to the church and humanitarian work without borders, a dedication that “necessitates avoiding any political affiliations that might hinder my ability to effectively fulfill my humanitarian responsibilities.”

He added: “Hon. Chairman, it deeply saddens me to resign from a position I have held and served for 13 years and to suspend my membership in a party I dearly cherish and, like many others, was willing to die for. I am grateful to the political leadership for allowing me to serve my country as Executive Director at the LRRRC, a position in which I left a legacy by constructing the first-ever, state-of-the-art LRRRC National Office in Liberia, located on Tubman Boulevard, Congo Town, Monrovia.”

Logan however said he was feeling “morally obliged to extend my thanks and appreciation to my esteemed colleagues on the National Executive Committee of the CDC for their support over the years.

“I also extend my gratitude to the religious community that stood by me while I served as Chaplain General. I am deeply humbled by the overwhelming support I received from the party and our dedicated partisans, who remain hopeful across the various party structures and the seventy-three electoral districts of Liberia.”

“Prayer Warrior” Takes Her Exit

While CDCians and the public might have been pondering over the Logan resignation, the Women Wing Chaplain General and member of the CDC Prayer Team also submitted her letter of resignation.

According to a communication dated July 7, 2024 and addressed to the Acting Chairperson of the party, Mother Comfort Lloyd said she was tendering her “resignation from the party (CDC) as national chaplain, women league/ Head prayer team with immediate effect”.

“I appreciate the standard bearer for giving me the time from 2005-2024 to serve this party,” she said. “I appreciate the secretary general (SG), members of the women league, the partisans and party at large.”

She added: “I am grateful for the length of time we all served in this noble party and Liberia.

With sincerity and love, I have made the decision to resign from politics and move on with my family and life in different dimension.”

It can be recalled that on June 17, 2024, following a few months of his resignation from the post of Chairmanship of the CDC, which he served since 2018, Mulbah K. Morlu, Jr. severed all ties with the party.

Morlu only resigned from the chairmanship but said he had remained a member of the Congress for Democratic Change, the lead constituent member of the coalition but later parted way, according to him because “a cross-section of the Liberian populace has chosen me as Chairman and Lead Advocate of the Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND).”

He said at the time that the opportunity to lead STAND had required him to devote his “entire being to these noble causes which, I believe, hold the promise for a brighter future; notwithstanding, it also demands that I uphold the highest ethical standards to ensure that our actions remain impartial, moral, and nonpartisan”.

“Towards this end, I hereby tender my resignation from the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) effective immediately,” he said.

It is speculated amongst CDC partisans that a good number of members of the former ruling party trooped behind the resigned Chairman, some in resignation and others on sabbatical with the party.

An insider confided in The Analyst that many of those who openly expressed support for the resignation of Mr. Morlu were dropped from CDC group chatrooms, something generating anger and leading into plans to quit the party once and for all.
