AMEU Sacks July 26 Violence Student Leader -Condemns Independence Day Violence

MONROVIA – In the aftermath of the July 26, 2022 Independence Day violence perpetrated by elements of the ruling party, under the banner of the CDC-COP, meted against students of the University of Liberia, the administration of the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) says it is appalled by the violence that characterized Liberia’s 175th Independence Day Celebration in Monrovia.

Confirming from video footage circulating on social media and through internal investigation that some of its students, including the President of the Students’ Governing Council, Mr. Abdurahman Barry, were directly or indirectly involved with the incident, the AMEU immediately relieved Mr. Abdurahman Barry of his position as President of the 22nd Graduating Class and the Students’ Governing Council and placed him and all students involved with the incident on Disciplinary Probation.

Furthermore, AME University joins other Liberians and relevant non-state actors in calling on the Government to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

We also laud the mandate issued by the President of the Republic of Liberia for the launch of an immediate, speedy, and thorough investigation.

“Meanwhile, the University has relieved Mr. Abdurahman Barry of his position as President of the 22nd Graduating Class and the Students’ Governing Council and placed him and all students involved with the incident on Disciplinary Probation.

“Our prayers are with all individuals that were injured during the incident; especially Christopher Sivili, a student of the University of Liberia who is said to be hospitalized.

“The Administration cautions all students of AME University to cultivate its core values of Integrity, Diversity, Liberty, etc. as they exercise rights guaranteed under the Law,” the AMEU release stated.
