After a passionate appeal from Liberia’s Vice President, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor, for funds to the upkeep of More Than Me Girls from West Point in school for the 2019 -2020 academic year; the Government of the People’s Republic of China has presented an initial check of US$2,000.00 (two thousand United States dollars) toward the initiative.
The funds are directed at a special scholarship scheme for the 19 girls to attend 10th grade at the Ricks Institution in Brewerville, outside Monrovia.
It can be recalled that at the inaugural graduation ceremony of the More Than Me Academy, now called the HillTop School; the Vice President after seeing the excellence and confidence portrayed by the girls; promised to lead the charge of forming a coalition of the willing; in order to secure funding for about 19 female students to attend the Ricks Institute in Virginia, outside Monrovia.
VP Howard-Taylor disclosed that the cost for each girl’s upkeep per annum is about US$2,000, which includes the school fees, uniforms and supplies.
In an emotional statement upon receiving the first donation, the Vice President made an SOS call of reminder to the Women of Liberia who joined a protest last year against what had occurred at the More Than Me girls Academy.
She encouraged them to put their protest into real action by contributing towards getting the 19 young women into school while informing that their protest caused the loss of income by donors noting, that Women of Liberia should ensure that the girls remained in school.
She reiterated her hope, that sooner rather than later; Women would make their donations to her Office as school was about to be open.
The Chinese Ambassador Fu Jijun whilst making the donation paid to the Ricks Institution, said China remains a strong development partner to Liberia, who will continue to support all sectors of the country; especially as it related to female empowerment.
The Chinese Ambassador also hailed Vice President Howard-Taylor for her great efforts in leading the cause for marginalized groupings in Liberia to include females and persons living with disabilities ; noting that the Chinese Government recognizes her efforts and encouraged her to continue to do more.
Receiving the check, Vice President Howard-Taylor thanked the Ambassador for noticing the current difficulties being faced by families and thanked the Chinese Government for the donation, describing it as timely.
She explained that the amount will be used to immediately begin the payment of tuition fees for the students.
Vice President Howard-Taylor is meanwhile appealing to other business organizations, friends of Liberia and persons of goodwill including the Women of Liberia to join this noble endeavor to help the female students complete their high school education.
