The Vice President of Liberia, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor, has been given a new high profile assignment by the Women Political Leaders (WPL)—Patron of the Girl2Leader Initiative Africa.
A letter to VP Taylor from the group said Chief Dr. Taylor’s selection was based on the fact that she has proven to be a true Liberian stateswoman, a distinguished political leader devoted to advocating for gender equality and human freedoms.
The group said it was pleased to honor Dr. Taylor with the assignment which will help improve its long-standing friendship with the Vice President, hoping that the group will continue to benefit from her expertise and insights through this new and significant role.
The letter signed by Silvana Koch-Mehrin, the President and Founder of Women Political Leaders and attested to by the Chairperson of the WPL Board, Helen Clark noted: “Giving your familiarity with the endeavors of this Initiative, having contributed to the success of its activities on the International Day of the Girl child in Liberia over the past few years, your passion and understanding of its importance would help elevate the Girl2Leader Initiative to new heights of recognition and impact across the continent of Africa.”
The group of women in political leadership said the need to embolden young women and girls to strive for a career at the highest echelons of power, as a future female leader, has never been more pressing, adding: “We strongly believe that with your esteemed patronage and strategic advice, the Girl2Leader Initiative in Africa will be invigorated and more successful in establishing permanent local chapters in more countries across the continent.”
The new assignment is being given Madam Howard-Taylor at the time the term of Vice President Taylor as a member of the Board of women Political Leaders has reached its conclusion in keeping with the statues of the Board.
The group thanked Dr. Taylor availing her expertise to the WPL, stating, “We thank you for your dedicated service to the WPL Board.”
“In giving your time over these years, you have not only provided valuable guidance to this organization, but you have helped advance the cause for which WPL exists: to increase the number and influence of women in political leadership,” the letter indicated.
The group recounted that since Dr. Howard-Taylor joined the Board in 2018, “WPL has attracted an estimated 2,000 females to more than 100 conferences in 35 countries on five continents. Among the many significant achievements of WPL, one of the greatest has been the inauguration of the Reykjavik Global Forum-Women Leaders, launched in November of 2018.”
The communication further stated: “The Forum has gone on to be one of the most foremost conference for women leaders worldwide. Last year’s digital edition attracted almost 900 leaders from around the world and across multiple sectors. Over the same period WPL has produced several informative content pieces in the form of studies/ reports, toolkits and an index such as: The Reykjavik index for Leadership, the Hofoi House reports on women in peace and security, and the women’s world Atlas.”
Meanwhile, VP Howard Taylor has acknowledged receipt of WPL invitation inviting her to the first 2021 meeting of the OECD Global Parliamentary Network (GPN), a legislative learning hub for legislators and parliamentary officials.
The Liberian President’s office responded to the invitation: “We are honored for the invitation extended and wish to inform the organizing committee of the Women Political Leaders (WPL), and the OECD, that she will be available for this very important virtual meeting slated for February 9-10, 2021. Madam Koch-Mehrin.”
The Liberian Vice President said she looks forward to a fruitful meeting and affirm her willingness to share ideas and experiences on the paths to a strong, resilient, green and inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.
