Reacting to an alleged attack meted to one of its partisan and senior senator of Montserrado County Abraham Darius Dillon, The Liberty Party (LP) says it is appalled by the wanton abuse of discretion and partisanship posturing under the guise of enforcing adherence to security protocols by officers of the Executive Protective Service (EPS) during the grand finals of the National County Sports Meet Tournament at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex on January 31st, 2021.
The Party said its attention is drawn to the attack of Senator Dillon and has reacted to “the attack and humiliation” meted out against the Senator of Montserrado County and calls on the Government of Liberia to swiftly launch a nondiscriminatory and impartial investigation into the repeated acts of disrespect, harassment, and intimidation.
A press release issued yesterday by the LP recounted that Senator Dillon was embarrassingly prevented from entering the VIP stand of the stadium having displayed his ticket while his security guard was manhandled and brutalized in the presence of Mr. Trokon Freeman, the Director of the Executive Protective Service.
“The EPS’ repeated display of disregard, harassment, and intimidation against Senator Dillion utterly undermines faith in the agency and shows collusion of its leadership with the Executive to implement these vices against a sitting Senator,” the party asserted.
The Party believes that the attack on the Senator is a direct introduction of creeping partisanship in the public view of the nation’s elite security force. “When one party is politicizing state security institutions, it is dangerous and nearly impossible for its followers to refrain from similar tactics-pushed by political opportunism,” the LP emphasized.
The Liberty Party reminds President George Weah of his duty to manage individuals and institutions in the security sector in a manner that considers the safety of all Liberians, regardless of political party affiliation, taking into account Liberia’s ugly past.
“Erstwhile, sooner or later, the public could begin to perceive law enforcement as a partisan patchwork, with some personnel and forces seen as enforcing the so-called “CDC Mandate” and others backing public laws – not because they are upholding differing laws of the state, but because of the ideological conviction of such political forces,” the LP indicated in its release.
According to the second largest political party of the land, “In a democracy such as ours, providing security at state expense ought not to become an act of patronage to create a coterie of ‘obliged’ and ‘loyal’ persons, as the current administration has done with the infusion of untrained and incompetent “CDC Zealots” and “Weah Loyalists” against the spirit and intent for which these agencies were created.
Under President Weah, the Party observed, the politicization of various national security institutions has been swift and extreme, making it easy for all to imagine a near-future in which the Liberian public sees our national security institutions as partisan forces.
To this end, the Liberty Party urges agents of the Executive Protective Service to desist from acts unbecoming of enforcement officers and calls on the Government of Liberia to swiftly launch a nondiscriminatory and impartial investigation into the repeated acts of disrespect, harassment, and intimidation against Senator Dillon by agents of the Executive Protective Service, the release signed by the Vice Chair of the LP for Press & Public Affairs, Mr. Daniel O. Sando concluded.
