MONROVIA – It is said by rural Liberians that it is during the end of the last day of the farming season that the best farmer is known and determined. At the dying minute of Liberia’s campaign for the much-adored United Nations Security Council non-permanent seat, all able citizens are marshaling and weaponizing their innate skills so that their country will win the hearts and souls of state parties at the United Nation to vote in favor of Liberia. Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr., the country’s head of delegation to the over dozen-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has also pressed his trigger, wooing colleagues within the regional bloc to stand with Liberia at the UN tomorrow, June 3, when his country’s fate for the prestigious post will be decided. THE ANALYST reports.

“I want us to please join Liberia in giving her your support. We need your support. We are appealing to ECOWAS. We know that Liberia is already a bloc vote to ECOWAS.”

Those were words by Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe when he took the rostrum of the ECOWAS Parliament plenary in wooing and echoing support for his country, Liberia’s, bid to grab the respected non-permanent member seat on the UN Security Council.

Commending the region group in which he is a ranking member for already endorsing Liberia as ECOWAS candidate for the Non-Permanent Seat on the United Nations Security Council, he said, addressing the head of the Parliament, “Mr. President, we begged you; please make the last round by just calling on the Head of States and government to please give Liberia that support. We really need that vote at the Security Council. Let stand by Liberia at the United Nations Security Council.”

The Liberian lawmaker overly repeated himself stating, “ Next week will be the vote. I want to ask you, Mr. President, to please make your final rounds in West Africa and to call on all our colleagues to please speak to your respective Foreign Ministers and Presidents.”

He told his colleagues that Liberia is a founding member to UN, the first time and the only time “we been on that seat was in the 60s by female Angie Brooks Randall. And this is another opportunity for Liberia to represent us at the Security Council. I want us to please join Liberia in giving her your support. We need your support. We are appealing to ECOWAS. We know that Liberia is already a bloc vote to ECOWAS.”

In respond the ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray said: “We make mention of your case through the cabinet of Liberia to the UN Security Council. As you all know, we are all with Liberia. We will continue the support for Liberia. There is a need to stay with Liberia. We want to congratulate the government for the good work they are doing.”

As Chair on the Committee on Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Snowe also thanked his colleagues their continued engagement with Liberia, for dispatching two missions to Liberia to resolve the impasse that existed at the House of Representative, acknowledge the role of the first mission which was spearheaded by the Speaker of the Parliament.

“I want to commend the Speaker and the delegation. There was a second mission, like you said in your statement, fortunately after all of those missions, the Court was able to make final determination and our matter have been resolved, and the House has elected a Speaker. Honorable Richard Nagbe Koon is the Speaker after the resignation of Speaker Koffa.”

Senator Snowe recalled that Liberia is a founding member to UN, the first time and the only time we been on that seat was in the 60s by female Angie Brooks Randall. And this is another opportunity for Liberia to represent us at the Security Council.
