MONROVIA: Still basking in the euphoria of a successful program held last weekend in Buchanan City where he named Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine as his running mate in the ensuing 2023 general election, the Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), Alexander B. Cummings said the CPP presidential ticket is a generational ticket representing both the older and younger generation just as he vowed to change the development narratives of the country if he is elected on October 10, 2023.
Speaking to a Liberian online media platform, SKTV on Monday, May 29, 2023, Cummings, while responding to a question how he would describe the ticket and what his running mate Charlyne, whom some believe has got no public service experience, said the ticket takes into consideration Liberia’s demographic space, stating that at 47 years, Charlyne is 19 years younger than him and will represent the young people of this country whom he said constitute a large portion of the country’s population.
Speaking further, the businessman turned politician who admitted of being excited for the right choice he has made to pick Charlyne, said it was an irony that the issue of public service or government experience is brought in anytime reputable people who have excelled creditably well and have contributed immensely to the development of the country outside of government employment as a way of discouragement because they are only interested in keeping the country down.
“I can tell you, and this has been what I have been telling people that if we are talking about government experience than by now, this country will be the best country in the world because a lot of people have served in the government but nothing has changed to reflect the number of years they have been in government.
“It has been the same old story of poverty, suffering, stealing and untold hardship on our people and those who have been responsible for this are the ones still finding ways to continue holding the country down”, Cummings said.
Cummings, who has repeatedly spoken about gender balance and the need for women to feature prominently in political leadership of the country also said that the ticket is making a bold statement that for development to flourish in the country, the potential and the “rich leadership quality” of women should be “tapped, encouraged and incorporated in what is needed to move the country forward what it takes to change the country” and went on to list some of the qualities he saw in Charlyne that triggered the decision to pick her as running mate.
“She comes with all these qualities and not in particular order, brilliance, smartness, integrity, strong work ethics, I think she and I can pair perfectly to change the country.
“And the good news about it is we are giving Liberians a clear choice, an integrity team to the Liberian people on how to move the country forward and if we are given the opportunity to serve, Liberians will see it and feel the impact in our first 100 days in office”, Cummings said confidently.
Asked what could be some of the measure put in place to restore public confidence in governance as well as addressing the “bread and butter” issue if elected, Cummings said he was aware that there is every chance to believe that he will inherit an empty treasury when elected because the CDC led government is fast depleting the treasury with the hope of rigging the election.
“We are deeply aware that we may not see any money in the coffers because the government is taking everything with them to campaign and with the hope that rig the election. So we are working on a couple of things to find a way to put money in the treasury so that we begin to pay the salaries of government workers.
We are also looking for opportunities for Liberian businesses to access loans as well as market women to start their businesses. We will hit the ground running and we have people who are already working on some of these things.
Cummings also said he will address the issue of youth at risk, commonly called ‘zogoes” the National Youth Scheme by providing them with opportunities to acquire skills that will offer them jobs to generate income and have secured their future.
He spoke confidently of his chances in the October 10, 2023 polls because according to him, “we provide the best opportunity to fix this country after long years of neglect.
The choice of Charlyne who is a lawyer and a professor of Law at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, University of Liberia is being seen as a desire come true for Mr. Cummings who months before the nomination period had told the public and the media that his choice of a running mate should be a female who will bridge the gender gap and a passionate personality who will subscribe his vision of the country.
Political pundits are also looking at the brand she brings to the table, being a daughter of the late legal luminary and political icon, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, founder and former Standard Bearer of the Liberty Party(LP) and who has a large following in Bassaland.
