NPHIL’s Dr. Nyan Bags Biomedical Science Award -Cathedral School Alumni Association Presents Bishop Francis Achievement Award

The newly appointed Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has just snatched a prestigious reward, the “Archbishop Michael K. Francis Achievement Award for Excellence in Biomedical Science”.

During a ceremony at NPHIL’s headquarters in Congo Town, the Cathedral School Alumni Association, Inc., New York Metro Chapter, presented Dr. Dougbeh C. Nyan the award “in recognition of his groundbreaking work in biomedical science and public health, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career”.

The accolade, named after one of Liberia’s most revered religious leaders, celebrates individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to science and public health.

According to a release, the award was delivered by Kélétigui Steve Tolbert II, with Dr. Nyan who expressed heartfelt gratitude in a statement on behalf of his organization.

“It’s an honor to be awarded “Archbishop Michael K. Francis Achievement Award for Excellence in Biomedical Science.’ I extend my thanks to the Cathedral Catholic High School Alumni Association for this recognition. Special thanks to my colleague, Elseah Chea, for accepting this award on my behalf.”

Dr. Nyan, a medical doctor, infectious disease expert, and winner of the 2017 African Innovation Prize for Social Impact, has a remarkable record in biomedical research. His work focuses on developing rapid, affordable diagnostic tools for detecting infectious diseases, particularly in underprivileged communities. Among his key achievements is the development of a novel multiplex isothermal amplification method for rapid virus detection, which has been recognized globally.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Dr. Nyan has played a critical role in public health advocacy, particularly during the Ebola crisis in West Africa. He led the Diaspora Task Force on the Ebola Crisis, recruiting medical personnel to support the region and providing expert testimony on the crisis to the U.S. Congress.

Nyan’s research contributions are widely published in prestigious journals, including Nature Scientific Reports and Clinical Infectious Diseases. His ongoing efforts in infectious disease diagnostics and advocacy have had a profound impact on the field of biomedical science and public health. Currently as Director-General of the NPHIL, Dr. Nyan heads the Incident Management System which is responding to the Mpox outbreak. His vigorous proactive strategies have kept Mpox from spreading in Liberia.
