MONROVIA – The Executive Director of the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE), Professor Edward Lama Wonkeryor, has urged the new leadership of the Margibi University to embrace transformation with a visionary outlook.
Speaking during the 3rd Commencement Convocation of the Margibi County University on Saturday, February 22, 2025, Dr. Wonkeryor highlighted the essential role of universities in community development, stating that their impact goes beyond academic instruction.
He emphasized that a university’s strength lies not in its physical resources but in its human resources – students, faculty, and leadership – who must exemplify resilience, especially during challenging times.
Dr. Wonkeryor called on the University management to focus on strengthening partnerships, fostering collaboration with industries, and engaging with local and international stakeholders are vital for revitalizing this institution.
He also encouraged Margibi University to tackle its challenges head-on and strive to become a center of excellence that nurtures innovative thinkers and future leaders.
Addressing the graduates, he said, “Your journey does not end here; it begins anew. You are entering a world filled with challenges but also immense opportunities. Your degree is not merely a certificate; it is a call to action.”
He urged the young people to pursue further studies, contribute to the workforce, or embark on entrepreneurial ventures, becoming ambassadors for Margibi University.
The NCHE Executive Director reiterated the government’s commitment to collaborating with universities across Liberia to enhance educational standards and expand access to quality learning.
He underscored the need for collective efforts from university administration, faculty, alumni, and local stakeholders to cultivate a democratic learning environment that promotes academic excellence and community growth.
“This graduation is not just a culmination of years of hard work; it is a beacon of hope, a statement of possibilities, and a powerful reminder that education remains the foundation of national progress,” Dr. Wonkeryor further emphasized.
Quoting Nelson Mandela, he remarked: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Dr. Wonkeryor acknowledged the challenges Margibi University has faced, including budget constraints and infrastructural inadequacies, but praised the dedication of students who remained committed to their education despite these hurdles.
Inspiring the audience with motivational thoughts, the NCHE ED said: “The eminent Nigerian scholar Chinua Achebe once said, ‘Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.’ This statement highlights the responsibility we all share in ensuring that Margibi University transforms into an institution that benefits not just its students, but the entire community.”
With a call for continuous self-improvement and meaningful societal contributions, Dr. Wonkeryor left the graduates with a powerful message: “May you carry the values of integrity, service, and perseverance as you leave these halls to make impactful contributions to your communities and beyond. Liberia needs your talent, your ideas, and your dedication. Be problem solvers, be change agents, and most importantly, never stop learning.”
The NCHE Boss extended heartfelt congratulations to the 3rd graduating class, celebrating their resilience and hard work as a beacon of hope for the future of education in Liberia.
