LP Adopts New Constitution

MONROVIA – As political institutions gear up to put their houses in order ahead of the upcoming midterm senatorial elections, the opposition Liberty Party over the weekend held a two-day sitting of the National Executive Council of the Liberty Party in the Port City of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County where delegates adopted amendments made to the party’s constitution as was proposed by its Constitutional Review Committee following a nation-wide consultation among stakeholders.

According to a statement from the Liberty Party, the delegates also approved the party’s involvement in the Collaborating Political Parties, as well as one-year financial and operational plan, and Senatorial Candidates for the December 8, 2020 midterm Senatorial Elections.

“In keeping with the amended constitution, the party will in a period of 150 days call a Special National Convention to conduct a leadership election,” the LP stated.

It can be recalled, following the 2017 Presidential Election which result the Liberty Party contested at the Supreme Court, the party in early 2019 held a Special National Convention in Voinjama City, Lofa County to mark a transition in political leadership from its Founding Father, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, to its current Political Leader, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence; and from the Executive Committee headed by former Chairman Ben Sanvee, to current Chairman Senator Steve Zargo.

“At the Voinjama Convention, the Founding Father and Former Standard Bearer of the Liberty Party among other things charged the current leadership of the party with a mandate to review the Liberty Party Constitution, with the goal of amending it where necessary. In adherence to this mandate, the Liberty Party held a retreat in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County early this year and set up a seven member Constitutional review Committee, headed by Cllr. Hilton Powo, to begin the constitutional review process,” the LP noted.

Making remarks during this weekend’s National Executive Council Sitting, Liberty Party Political Leader Senator Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence thanked the delegates and members of the Liberty Party for their continuous show of loyalty to the party amid challenging circumstances in the country, and emphasized that it is time all members of the party commit to due payment as one of the surest ways of moving the party forward.

“An elderly member of the Liberty Party Grand Bassa County Chapter, Mr. John Thompson was awarded as a model of due payment in Liberty Party. Chairman Steve Zargo for his part commended the delegates and encouraged them to keep upholding the legacy of integrity established by Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine. Musa Hassan Bility, head of the Liberty Party Advisory Council, elaborated on the party’s financial plan and provided additional means of raising money to run the party,” the LP disclosed.
