MONROVIA – Nimba County, Liberia’s second largest vote-rich region, holds a special card for anyone wishing to enter the Executive Mansion through the ballot box. The Nimba factor played prominently in the Unity Party’s two term wins in 2005 and 2011. Nimba also proved to be the trump card for Weah and his Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) party in 2017, a fact that has not been lost on Unity Party and its presidential candidate Joseph Nyuma Boakai who has made it his duty to end 2022 with a key visit to Nimba County.
According to insiders from the office of former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who is affectionately called “JNB”, the Unity Party flagbearer visited Nimba County during the last week of 2022 at the invitation of the municipality of Garplay, where he met with various groups of citizens from youth groups to widows and civil society actors as well as elders.
“The visit was intended for the former Vice President and Standard Bearer of the Unity Party to exchange views with the people in that part of the nation on the way forward for Liberia,” the former VP’s office stated.
Ambassador Boakai was accordingly warmly received by the people of Garplay in the most befitting traditional setting where he was presented with gifts of colorful traditional gowns, livestock, among others.
JNB is a household name in Nimba County especially among cocoa and coffee smallholders because of his work in that part of the country when he headed the Liberia Produce Marketing Corporation in the 1980s.
The former Vice President’s visit to Nimba County comes in the wake of reports that he is shortly to announce his Vice-Presidential pick for the 2023 presidential election.
Speculations have been rife that JNB could settle on a son or daughter from Nimba as Vice President in a bid to win over votes from Nimba. Prominent names like former Superintendent Edith Gongloe-Weh, and Liberia People’s Party (LPP) Standard Bearer Tiawan Saye Gongloe have been cropping up.
JNB Congratulates Urey
Meanwhile, wrapping up his Nimba County, JNB reached out to his friend, Mr. Benoni Urey of the All Liberian Party (ALP), to congratulate the business tycoon after he had won the Standard Bearer post at the ALP Convention in Gbarnga, Bong County on Friday, December 30, 2022.
