From Stryker to Nimba: PYJ Embarks on Final Journey -As Monrovians Held Spellbound Over Stately Funeral

MONROVIA – The buzzling metropolis of Monrovia wore an uncharacteristically gaunt demeanor yesterday as the funeral procession bearing the mortal remains of the late Nimba County Senior Senator Prince Yormie Johnson rolled solemnly from the Samuel A. Stryker Funeral Home in Sinkor to the grounds of the Capitol Building on Capitol Hill where thousands of sympathizers, well-wishers, family members, officials from the three branches of government and members of the diplomatic community gathered to pay their last respect to the enigma of a man whose life, like his sudden unannounced passing, will remain a talking point in the annals of Liberian history.

The body of Senator Johnson, who died suddenly on Thursday, November 28, 2024, was removed yesterday from the Samuel Stryker Funeral during the early morning hours and escorted by the Vice President of Liberia to the Grounds of the Capitol Building.

The scene at Stryker was one of utter melancholy as family members of the fallen senator sat sullenly and listened to the funeral discourse. In attendance was Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung and his spouse, as well as Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and other members of the National Legislature, who were seen visibly shaken at the sight of the Nimba County strongman lying in repose in a glass casket with the flag of Liberia draped over his body from the midriff to the feet.

Following the Stryker funeral service, Senator Johnson’s casketed remains was fully covered with the Liberian flag as the Armed Forces of Liberia military band played funeral procession medleys, and the resplendently decorated float rolled from the funeral home to the Capitol Building, escorted by the military.

Rolling solemnly along the Tubman Boulevard, meandering past the Monrovia City Hall, the procession included a slew of police escort, followed closely by the vice president’s convoy, then the clergymen, followed by the float and the immediate family of the late senator, as well as members of the legislature, sympathizers and friends.

At the Monrovia City Hall, the funeral convoy stopped briefly to allow people to disembark and march with the body to the entrance of the Capitol Building where the legislature officially took charge of the funeral protocol, followed by the military, to allow the remains of Senator Johnson to lie-in-state.

On the grounds of the Capitol Building, Nimbaians adorned in colorful garbs were seen chanting slogans and singing war-time songs heralding the exploits of Senator Johnson during his heydays as leader of the erstwhile Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia rebel faction.

Paying tribute to their fallen hero, the Nimba County Legislative Caucus used the occasion to express appreciation to the Liberian people for showing their love for the late Johnson and the bereaved family during this sad period of national mourning.

“Today is a sad day for the citizens of Nimba County. But sometimes sadness can turn to joy. From what we have seen from the Liberian public today we are very happy that our father is going to rest because it is known all around the world that a great man was born, and a great man is leaving the earth today,” a spokesman for the Nimba Legislative Caucus said.

By 5:00 pm the body of the late senator was taken to his Christ Chapel of Faith Ministry around LBS for a night of wake keeping that was fully attended by members of the three branches of government, sympathizers and well-wishers.

In line with the official gazette from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Senator Johnson’s remains will today be escorted to Karnplay, Nimba County, making a brief stop in Sanniquellie for a three-hour tribute ceremony, to be escorted to Saclepea for additional tributes.

On Thursday, January 18, there will be a final public viewing at the Gompa Football Field, and on Saturday, January 18 at 10:00 am a final funeral service will be held at the PYJ University Auditorium. The body of the fallen senator will then be laid to rest immediately.

“As a mark of last respect and tribute to the late Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, President Boakai has declared a period of mourning from Monday, January 13 to Saturday January 18 during which time the national ensign of the Republic will be flown half-mast from all Public Buildings in Nimba County from Eight O’clock ante meridian to Six O’clock post meridian,” the Government of Liberia gazette said.
