EPA Embarks on Sand Mining Awareness Takes Campaign To in ELWA, Other Communities

Amid reports of escalating environmental issues in the country occasioned by sand mining, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun public awareness campaign targeting the ELWA community and its surrounding areas.

The initiative aims to educate residents on the detrimental effects of sand mining, particularly its role in exacerbating flooding.

The campaign, held on September 7, 2024 as facilitated by Ms. Tennema M. Coleman, Assistant Manager of the Outreach and Training Unit at the EPA at which time she outlined that the campaign’s primary focus on tackling the rampant sand mining activities in the region.

She told her audience at the engagement exercises: “We are here to address the sand mining issues that have become increasingly prevalent in this area. Our goal is not to halt the practice immediately, which may not be feasible, but to mitigate its adverse effects and promote a cleaner, healthier environment.”

In an effort to enhance community engagement, Madam Coleman along with residents set up an Environmental Club that would serve as a bridge between the community and the EPA, facilitating ongoing dialogue and collaboration on environmental issues.

She underscored the importance of public education in combating the harmful effects of sand mining and emphasized the need to foster partnerships and raise awareness—crucial steps towards environmental conservation and resilience.

“By working together and understanding the environmental impacts, we can take proactive measures to protect our surroundings,” she stressed.

Also participating at the engagement exercise with the communities was Momo R. Kamara, the Education Officer for the Outreach and Training Unit at the EPA. He reported a positive reception from the community, noting that the initiative was well-received, suggesting a shift towards adopting more sustainable practices.

Kamara also reminded residents of the broader implications of environmental issues, stressing that problems like sea erosion, flooding, and air pollution affect everyone, regardless of their location.

“Let us work towards solutions that improve our lives without causing long-term environmental problems,” Kamara urged. “It is essential that we address current challenges in a way that does not create future issues.”

The awareness campaign was marked by active participation from residents of nearby communities, including Seaview, Cotton Tree, Baptist Seminary, Gbengbar, and Christian communities. Despite some initial resistance, the majority of attendees showed a willingness to cooperate with the EPA for sustainable environmental management.

Resident Gabriel Neplay suggested that the EPA expand its outreach by engaging local radio stations and print media. “While working with community leaders is crucial, involving the media could significantly amplify the campaign’s reach and impact,” Neplay proposed.

The EPA’s sand mining awareness campaign represents a significant step towards environmental stewardship in ELWA and its surrounding communities. By educating residents and fostering collaboration, the agency aims to mitigate the environmental impacts of sand mining and promote a more sustainable future for the region.
