MONROVIA: The multinational mining company ArcelorMittal Liberia supports local agricultural continuity in all its affected communities.
ArcelorMittal does this by empowering farmers and compensating those with tree crops in its mining areas in Nimba County.
In a further demonstration of its commitment to supporting local agriculture and communities, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) on Wednesday October 4, 2023 disbursed over $328,000 to 73 tree crop farmers in Nimba County.
The funds were issued in the form of 79 cheques, each reflecting payments for various tree crops cultivated by the farmers.
The beneficiaries, hailing from towns and villages around Mount Yueliton in Nimba County, received compensation for a range of tree crops, including oranges, mangoes, rubber, cocoa, sugarcane, and more.
The compensation amounts were determined based on the Ministry of Agriculture’s approved pricing structure for tree crops in the affected areas.
Resettlement Supervisor at ArcelorMittal Liberia, Jerry S Fumba, highlighted the company’s practice of compensating farmers at the approved rates.
For instance, a mature orange tree fetched $95, while a premature tree garnered $47. Similarly, mature mango trees commanded a compensation of $94, while premature ones were valued at $42 each.
To date the company has paid more than 3 million dollars to farmers in its operational areas especially in Nimba county.
This initiative by ArcelorMittal Liberia serves as a testament to the company’s dedication to sustainable practices and fostering positive relations with local communities.
The support provided to tree crop farmers not only aids in boosting farmers’ resettlement and future plans but also contributes to the economic upliftment of the affected regions in Nimba County.
The distribution of funds reflects a mutually beneficial relationship between the mining company and the local agricultural community, demonstrating the potential for collaboration that enhances the well-being of both parties involved.
As ArcelorMittal Liberia continues to invest in the country, such initiatives are expected to strengthen local economies and promote sustainable development.
Over this resettlement of tree crop farmers’ initiative, dozens of other residents in towns and villages have benefited.
The AML Resettlement Supervisor said the company is committed to engaging communities on sustainable agriculture practices that could help feed the country and protect the environment.
He added that AML is continuing to support communities in this and other ways as a responsible business.
