In a statement issued Friday, August 22, 2026, the Office of former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor rejected all charges read against her by the Minister of Justice. It said she was accused of drug trafficking and related offenses, allegations it called baseless and without merit.

The Airport Stop

According to the statement, Howard-Taylor was stopped at Roberts International Airport on August 19 as she prepared to travel to Accra, Ghana. Her office said she received no prior notice of any investigation and no summons for questioning.

Authorities, the statement said, sought to link her to individuals under investigation for transnational crime, based on official engagements from her time as Vice President. Her office argued that such official contacts are not evidence of wrongdoing.

The statement said Howard-Taylor offered at the airport to report voluntarily to police headquarters with her lawyers. It said her vehicle was later intercepted on the Congo Town back road and she was escorted to headquarters and charged.

Her office described the treatment as inconsistent with her stated willingness to cooperate. It said she was charged in the presence of her legal team.

Fabrication Allegation

In its most serious claim, the office alleged that unnamed elements within the government planned to use artificial intelligence to fabricate audio and visual evidence. It said any such material would be met with independent forensic scrutiny.
