WAEC to Introduce Customized Mathematical Set on Its Exams

The Liberia National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), will, beginning April 2020, introduce a Customized Mathematical Set (CMS) on its West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and Liberia Junior High School Certificate Examinations (LJHSCE).

With the introduction of this new gadget, candidates will be barred from carrying personal materials such as calculators and watches to examination centers, because the set contains all of what the candidates will need to sit the exams, including a calculator with an installed time piece.

The decision was reached at the 126th Meeting of the Liberia Administrative and Finance Committee (A&F) on June 17, 2019 in Monrovia. The Liberia Administrative and Finance

Committee is the highest decision making body on administrative and financial matters of the institution. It comprises key national stakeholders, including the Ministries of Education, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Civil Service Agency, General Services Agency, Association of Universities, National Teachers Association of Liberia, and National Principal Association amongst others.

The 126th Liberia Administrative and Finance Meeting was chaired by Madam Madia Mensah, the Second Government Nominee to Council who sat in for Deputy Education Minister for Instruction Hon. Alexander Duopu, the Chief Government Nominee (CGN) to Council and statutory Chairperson of the Committee who was absent. Also in attendance was the Registrar to Council, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae.

The resolution by the Committee to introduce the Customized Mathematical Set is aimed at curtailing examination malpractices and other misconducts on the part of candidates during the administration of its examinations.

The body at the meeting agreed that the mathematical set be purchased for seven United States Dollars (US$ 7.00), and that the payment be done through the schools. The Committee also agreed that ownership of the mathematical set will be solely the candidates.

In a related development, the Liberia National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has with immediate effect approved new fees for both the Primary and Junior High School Certificate Examinations from one thousand Liberian Dollars (L$ 1,000.00) to two thousand Liberian Dollars (L$ 2,000.000) and from two thousand three hundred-fifty Liberian Dollars (L$ 2,350.00) to three thousand five hundred Liberian Dollars (L$ 3,500.00) respectively.

The institution also has on sale, certificate covers which are sold for Five Hundred Liberian Dollars (L$ 500.00) each and can be purchased at its business and finance office.
