The office the Vice President of Liberia, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor has identified with Liberians amidst the Coronavirus pandemic in the country. The Vice President presented a 25kg bag of rice, a hand washing bucket including chloride, soap, Dettol, and sanitizer to each family head as a way of identifying with them in fight against COVID -19.
VP Howard-Taylor made the presentation on Saturday April 4, 2020 when she toured the Sophie Community where resides.
Speaking during the outing through the community, Vice President Taylor told Liberians to take seriously every preventive measure instituted by the Liberian Government through the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia to prevent the Coronavirus from further spread in the country.
She said for Liberia to curb the virus, it requires the involvement of everyone, especially by observing health protocols.
She said for reason that the coronavirus can overwhelm Countries like China, United States of America, Italy, Spain and others who have better and even more resilient health systems than Liberia, Liberians must take every preventive measure seriously so as to contain the pandemic.
According to Chief Dr. Taylor, the quantity of what she has presented should not be considered, but said the focus of the intervention is to widen the awareness in the communities, noting that the safety of Liberians matters to her greatly.
She cautions the community dwellers to place the hand washing buckets to areas that will be accessible to people who will be entering their homes.
Several community dwellers receiving the gesture from the Vice President Howard-Taylor thanked her for what they term as, “restoring hope to a perishing people.”
The citizens said such initiative by the VP is not the first of its kind, and therefore added that they are not surprised by the gesture.
Earlier before the VP’s community tour, the Jewel Starfish Foundation Board Chair, Norwu Howard, led a team of Starfish Foundation Awareness delegates to the Down Town quarter of Sophie Community where the group donated to 50 homes, rice and preventive materials, including buckets and other sanitary items.
Madam Howard said the assorted items were given to the organization by the International Organization on Migration (IOM), Lucky Pharmacy and the A. M. Doglioti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia, while the rice was given by the Starfish Foundation founder and Chief Sponsor, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor.
Presenting the items to the community, Starfish Foundation Program Director, Stephene Kpoto, told the people that her organization assessment on COVID-19 prevention has captured many communities in Monrovia and its environs, including the Sophie community.
She said it is about time that for every Liberian, particularly the young people, to work together to fight the coronavirus pandemic that has posed a serious threat to the lives of everyone in World.
Currently, Coronavirus is affecting people in about 199 Countries and territories on Globe.
Ms. Kpoto said the survival of every person in Liberia is the paramount concern to all Liberians, saying that she wants the fight against the deadly virus be intensified to ensure that it is contained for the safety of the Country and its people.
Meanwhile, Koiyan Massawala of the Down Sophie Community area, on behalf of the residents, thanks the Foundation for the gesture, and assured that the materials will be used for the intended objective.
