Tweah, Others Trial Start Today

By: Anthony Q. Jiffan, Jr.

MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia has announced that the trial of former Minister of Finance and Development Planning Samuel D. Tweah, Jr., former Solicitor General Nyanti Tuan, former Presidential Security Advisor Jefferson Karmo and other former officials of government will begin on today at 2:00 pm at criminal court C at the Temple of Justice.

Those were the words of Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel O. Sando when he spoke at MICAT regular press briefing in Monrovia, Tuesday, November 19, 2024 regarding the trial that is set to resume on the justification of the US 8 million bond filed by the defendants.

Deputy Minister Sando indicated that it appears that the bond is not fit to meet the test of time as the property in question is not tax compliance consistent with the Liberia revenue code.

He noted that the owner of the property that provided the bail would also be questioned by government during the trial, asserting that the defendants seem to be in trouble based on the analysis conducted on the bond.

“The owner of the property that tender the bond, from the analysis conducted on the bond it appears that the defendants are in trouble,” he explained.

It be recalled in July of this year, former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah, former solicitor general Nyanti Tuan, former national security advisor Jefferson Karmo, former director general of financial intelligence agency Stanley Ford and others were charged for economic sabotage, money laundering, criminal facilitation, theft, illegal fund disbursement, criminal conspiracy, and misappropriation of public funds.

At the same time, Deputy Information Minister Sando indicated that the arrival of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to Sierra Leone marks the beginning of a four-day working visit that is intended to enhance bilateral ties and regional collaboration between the two countries.

According to him, while in Sierra Leone, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his counterpart President Julius Maada Bio will hold discussions on transformative initiatives aimed at advancing economic development, regional stability and sustainable growth.

He noted that key discussions between the two Mano River region leaders will focus on boosting trade and investment as well as improving infrastructure and advancing joint initiatives in agriculture and tourism.

He further that their conversation will also highlight regional security and incorporation on the Mano River framework and other major priorities of the two countries.
