MONROVIA – Representative Richard Koon, who is under fire for illegally taking over the Speakership of the House of Representatives in the 55th Legislature, continues to endure the verbal torment of the Liberian public, with the tough-talking Chief Executive Officer of the SpoonTalk show being the latest to splash volleys of censures at him.
Stanton Witherspoon, on his arguably most popular social media talk show in the country, joined several other Liberians who feel that the Montserrado District #11 representative has invited a “political curse” upon himself by initiating acts that lead to him commandeering the House Speaker post that he had failed to democratically capture in January 2024.
He revealed in that two things are currently taking place against to Richard Koon in his District #11: people are gathering signatures to remove him, and various national and international VIPs are shunning him with handshake.
The Spoon CEO said perhaps the gathering of signatures to remove Koon as representative may not work since he’s a rebel speaker and most lawmakers in Liberia are not inclined to expel fellow legislators for fearing of setting precedence that they themselves could fall into.
But he said Richard Koon, with all indications, he cannot be re-elected, particularly when “Original Country Man” decides to run.
“Richard Koon is automatically down when Original Country Man” steps in the race in 2029; His future is limited within this time frame up to 2029” and he would be finished politically.
Shun by Everyone
Witherspoon continued his lambast of Koon, indicating that the bad part is that international folks are refusing to shake his hands: Sirleaf refused his hand, Sierra Leonean president refused his hand, Ghanaian president refused his hand, everybody refusing to shake him all over the place.
“When you have Madam Sirleaf shaking Thomas Fallah hands and refusing to shake Richard Koon hands, that’s a problem,” the CEO said. “When you have people in Liberia refusing to acknowledge Richard Koon as Speaker, that’s a problem.”
He said Richard Koon is going down in history, like a neglected, rejected, disowned Speaker. At this time, he said, is not a pleasurable job for Koon at all.
According to him, the best thing Richard Koon can do is to keep himself feeling happy. “You know sometimes when you mess up with your wife, and you pretend to be happy, that’s the case of Richard Koon.
True being told, he said, “I do think Richard Koon is in a bad spot. Richard Koon going to make the money; that’s what he can do right now; but 2029, voters will reject Richard Koon. He can get all the money he wants to get right now, 2029 they will reject him because, you know why, the people don’t like the procedure by which he became Speaker.”
Richard Koon thinks that the people want him as Speaker, Spoon also contends, “to end the whole wahala, he should open an election for the speakership. If Richard Koon think who current has 43 can get 57 individuals that will be willing to support him to shut down Fonati Koffa, let him organize new election for the speakership and bring some respect to that House.”
Otherwise, Witherspoon said, “he should step down and allow the people to go for elections; it will end the whole wahala.”
He continued: “Now that he has get the Musa Bility group attending session with the majority bloc, for the sake of peace, for the sake of transparency, for the sake of good governance, for the sake of unity in our country, and to restore hope and dignity, Richard Koon should step down and allow a new Speaker election in the House of Representatives. Everybody will take Richard Koon as a hero. But he wouldn’t and that’s problem in our country.
“That will be a lasting problem, and the people will continue to go down that the majority bloc acting in a condition called ultra virus. They hijacked this thing; they stole this thing away; they’re creating problems. Something you have never seen before. It is being maliciously done; this is a junta movement.”
The SpoonTalk CEO posits that Koon and others are making the same mistakes as seen in the break-in and forceful entry into Fonati Koffa office.
“Koon, you still broke the law; you suspend hundreds of them you still breaking the law; you say you are not giving them their money; you ate their money; you still broke the law,” he doubled down. “The Speaker’s budget supposed to be US$1.9m, and you took it to US$5.8m. You still broke the law.”
Stanton Witherspoon also charged that “It is all about the money. Should we sit on this show to defend this thing? That nonsense needs to stopped.”
“You have young educated men and women serving as Representatives for their people; they have disgraced themselves, and brought themselves to public shame. Say anything you want to say but they broke the law. They caused the Capitol Building to get burnt down.”
“It was because of Richard Koon, it was because of Foday Fahnbulleh, it was because of Fonati Koffa, it was because of Malvin Cole, it was because of all 73 of them including the Senators the Capitol Building is burnt including the Executive. The Liberian people will not forgive them. The Liberian people will meet them at the ballot box.”
