Speaker Koffa Meets New US Ambassador -Says Mark Toner Comes When Liberia’s Democracy Being Consolidated

MONROVIA- Despite recent row ignited by the country’s 177th National Orator, a row which refreshed citizens misgivings regarding Liberia-US diplomatic relationship, the new ambassador of the United States has hit the ground running. In the last few days of his incumbency, Ambassador Mark Toner has been familiarizing himself with top government officials. It can be recalled he met with Foreign Ministry officials before heading to the Executive Mansion to present his letters of credence to President Joseph Boakai. The next host of the US ambassador was the Speaker of the House, J. Fonati Koffa, as The Analyst reports.

House Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa has been meeting with the new ambassador of the United States, Mark Toner. He did so last week, officially welcoming the US Ambassador whom he described an “experienced diplomat and skilled Foreign service veteran”.

Koffa said Ambassador Toner has come to the country “at a very important moment in our country’s history as we consolidate our country’s post war democracy and work with all partners to reposition Liberia as a valuable ally and a vibrant trading partner”.

He told the top US diplomat: “We here at the 55th National Legislature will do our best to enact laws and provide the kind of proactive leadership and oversight that would foster even greater levels of Liberia-United States trade and investment relations leveraging our significant diaspora community based in America and our longstanding friendship and kinship between the United States and Liberia.”

Koff said he was looking forward “to many more exchanges with Ambassador Toner and his team at the US embassy working in tandem with the Liberian Government to promote new avenues for shared prosperity and growth in our cherished relationship”.
