MONROVIA – What many say are the indelible footprints that fallen Nimba County Senator Prince Yormie Johnson left in the sands of time was picked up clearly by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung in a special tribute last Saturday in honor of the man that Liberians at home and abroad have come to dub as the Nimba Political Godfather, or Liberia’s postwar Political Kingmaker.
In a highly-charged emotional speech, Vice President Koung acknowledged Senator Johnson’s immense contributions to the country’s political dispensable, and to his personal growth from a store seller to the National Legislature and now the second highest office in the land.
According to VP Koung, Senator Johnson helped in his rise to political prominence, and for that he remains forever grateful to his political godfather.
He started the story, often calling on the attention of President Boakai who was president:
“Sitting in my store selling one morning, some friends came and asked me to be a representative in 2010. When I told my father and mother, my mother said I shouldn’t accept it because at the Capitol, people die there. My father said, if your friends entrust you go for it. Mr. President, it’s clear: my father came from Sinoe. I haven’t been to my father’s home before. My father came in the 1960s and had us here. We are seven children. I was born here, reared here. My mother is a Dan woman. I know no other county besides Nimba. I have a village in Nimba. Mr. President, when I got to the elections, knowing politics the way it is, other people on the other side of the divide said, this is our sister’s son. He can’t be a representative here. I needed a father figure who would speak for me. Senator Johnson stepped in that gap and said, ‘He’s my son. Nobody questions his paternity. He is my sister’s son. He was born here. He’s a Dan man, and I will support him to be representative’.
“Mr. President, I won that election. In 2017, Mr. President, he supported me again, and I won again. And I thought about leaving because Mr. President, I came from a business background. After six years in the legislature, knowing where I was before going in, and where I was at the time, I started to envy some of my friends, the likes of Floyd Tomah, that they were doing better than me, so there was no need to be in politics. I wanted to go back to do business. Mr. President, one morning Senator Johnson called me again, telling me to get myself ready to be Senator. Mr. President, he announced it; I went to the election, and I won, and I became senator.
“Mr. President, at the end of 2022 around December, Senator Johnson called me in the morning through Melvin Yealu and said, ‘Jerry, get prepared for leadership. I want you to run for the presidency’. And I asked him, ‘president for what thing, Mr. Senator’. And he asked me, ‘are you afraid?’ I said, ‘I am not afraid Senator, but you just said president’. He said, ‘president of Liberia. I am the leader of MDR. I contested the presidency two times in this country. I came both third and fourth. I am getting older. I want you to go for it.’
“Mr. President, we came to Gompa here, Senator Johnson cast the white ballot and told the Nimba people that this was your political leader of the MDR. Mr. President, right after that, when I got to Monrovia, you called me, and said, ‘Jerry, I need to see you’, and I went to your house. I remember it was around 11pm. And you said, ‘Jerry, you need to support me, I need your support’. And I said, ‘Mr. President, I supported you in 2017. Let me talk to my big brother, my father, my godfather. Let me hear what he has to say and I will revert to you.’
“I called Senator Johnson in the morning and said, ‘Senator, I got a call from Vice President Boakai last night, and he asked me to support him’. Senator Johnson said, ‘let’s support him. Give me his number. I lost his number in 2017. I have not spoken to him’.
“I give him your number, Mr. President. He tried calling you, but apparently you were busy doing something, you were not around your phone. He called me back and said, ‘I called the former Vice President numerous times, but he has not answered my phone’.
“I said, let me call Mr. Jacob Kabakollie’. I called Jake and told him that Senator Johnson was calling former Vice President Boakai; and then you returned the call Mr. President. On that call, he was upfront with you, that Nimba will support you, and he did. Mr. President, I say this to say, the Nimba people are your children. Senator Johnson showed you as our father and we are your children,” Vice President Koung said to thunderous applause from the multitude that turned out to bury the remains of the late Nimba County political godfather.
Johnson’s kingmaking role further chronicled
Vice President Koung also used the occasion to stress the role that the elders of Nimba played in consolidating the votes that made former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai president of Liberia during the 2023 presidential and general elections. VP Koung especially honed on the role that Senator Johnson played in ensuring that he Koung became Vice President of Liberia.
He continued: “Mr. President, sometime April 7, 2023, the elders of Lofa County gathered in Bong County to ask the Bong County people, being their nephew, you being a Kissi man from Lofa County, the Kpelle people are your nephews; the elders of Lofa asked the elders of Bong County that their uncle is running for President and they needed the people of Bong County support.
“The elders of Lofa in turn gave a kola nut and a white chicken to the people of Bong County. Mr. President, I am told the people of Bong County received the chicken and the kola on April 7, 2023, and said they will support you. But they needed to speak to their neighbor, the people of Nimba. And so, the Bong County people sent for the elders of Nimba. The elders of Nimba gathered in Bong County between 12 to 2 in the morning. And the Bong County elders asked the elders of Nimba that their uncle is running and they wanted Nimba’s support.
“The elders of Nimba said, ‘your uncle is our uncle too. We will support him. But we want him to look among our children and take one of them to tote his bag behind him while he’s going to the Mansion’.
“Senator Johnson was sitting on his porch in Monrovia coordinating and giving directions to the Nimba people. Fortunately, Mr. President, I happened to be that the Nimba people gave you to tote your bag. Mr. President, I don’t share a vice president relationship with you. I share a father and son relationship with you because the Nimba elders told me, ‘You are not going as a vice president, you are going to tote your father’s bag’. That’s why I behave the way I behave.
“Mr. President, our father is gone. The man who coordinated and who was speaking through the elders of Nimba on that fateful April 7 night is lying in this casket before us. The Nimba people are left with no father today. But he showed you that we should follow you, and we are behind you. You are our father, Mr. President. The Nimba people will knock on your door every day because they have no other door to knock. The door they used to knock before to call press conference; whether they were calling from Grand Kru, from River Cess, Grand Gedeh or Gbarpolu, that maybe the people are putting traditional dancers out and they were chasing them; the man they used to call was Senator Johnson, and he is no more here. Mr. President, that call is being directed to you. We will call you because he showed us to you before he left.
Commendations
Vice President Koung used the occasion to express his appreciation to the various facets of Liberian society.
“To the Christian community, we want to say thank you. Senator Johnson was a clergy man, a member of your community and you played your part. From the day he fell till today, you have been out.
“Senator, I remember you said to me, Jerry, the day I die, my wake will not be a small one. There will be people who will be happy that I am dead; there will be people who will be crying that I am dead. There will be mixed views. Senator, I saw it today. People who said they will never speak to you and myself till they die, they are here. Senator, you were truly a prophet. You saw everything beyond your death. Thank you for the man you were.
“To our traditional people, we want to say thank you for the respect you gave to our Senator. Some of you have not even taken a bath for a week because you are in your traditional attire. Thank you.
“To the Government of Liberia, we want to say thank you for your contribution. Mr. President, we want to thank you for your personal contribution. If it weren’t for your personal contribution today, the honor we gave our leader maybe we wouldn’t have done it the way we did it.
“To the Liberian Senate, Senate Pro Tempore, and the entire senate, I want to say thank you. You laid for the funeral home and you paid for the lying in state at the Capitol.
“The young people of Nimba, let us work together. We need to stop some of the Amandla. You cannot always be Amandla behind people. I am a young man like yourself. Thank God we are having a funeral in Gompa City and everybody knows me. From selling tablets in Saclepea, Bahn market, from selling cane juice and red oil crossing the borders at 2am to Guinea or Cote d’Ivoire. Whether it was a taxi driver who had to 2am to go to Monrovia and make sure to make a trip back, we went through there, and we are here today. Stop some of the Amandla because people gave you ten dollars. Start focusing on how you can get out of that Amandla and do something for yourself. Let us be together as young people. I am evidence of success from Senator Johnson lying here today.
“To all of our citizens, our mothers, thank you. The people of Tapitta, no disrespect to you. It’s just that we needed to bury this Saturday and so, if we had continued to Tapitta and Yahwin Mensona, we wouldn’t have buried today, understanding that next week, there is a State of the Nation Address and other things coming up. And that’s why it was pressing. But thank you for coming to Saclepea, the people of Tapitta and the people of Yahwin Mensona. I will make it my business to come to see you so we can talk.
“The people of Gbelehgeh, I want to say thank you. The people of Zoegeh, thank you. The people of Saclepea-Ma, thank you. The people of Saniquellie-Ma, I say thank you,” Vice President Koung said.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (12A)
Rating:
Here, for once, is a movie that lives up to its billing.
Batman v Superman is being energetically promoted as an ‘epic superhero journey
like no other’, and that’s quite true.
For unlike most other recent superhero films, certainly those
from the Marvel stable, it is incoherent, tedious and largely devoid of wit.
It is also thunderously loud, which goes with the territory, but there are times when I don’t mind sacrificing
my eardrums and times when I do. After two-and-a-half hours, the super power I most
craved myself was an ability to doze through
explosions.
From start to finish, Zack Snyder’s film judders with its own self-importance, piling up
allusions to God, the 9/11 attacks and the spectre of nuclear holocaust as if
we’re meant to take any of this stuff seriously
From start to finish, Zack Snyder’s film judders with its own self-importance, piling up allusions to God, the
9/11 attacks and the spectre of nuclear holocaust as if
we’re meant to take any of this stuff seriously.
Maybe suspicions should have been raised by the title. What they thought would be its big selling-point
turns out to be the film’s fatal flaw.
Hamlet didn’t get angsty with Macbeth, Oliver Twist never buddied up with David Copperfield, and
Batman and Superman were not meant to fight each other.
It’s a narrative powered by a dodgy premise.
Here, for once, is a movie that lives up to its billing.
Batman v Superman is being energetically promoted as an ‘epic superhero journey like
no other’, and that’s quite true. Pictured: Ben Affleck (Batman) and Henry Cavill (Superman)
On the other hand, chaps notionally on the same side
do fall out. Take David Cameron and Iain Duncan Smith.
They don’t quite represent the same clash of irresistible
force and immovable object, but I’d almost rather watch
those two at loggerheads than Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel and
Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader.
What’s Affleck doing in the cape anyway? He’s well over 40 now,
and showing it around the eyes. Who wants to see crow’s feet on Batman?
It looks as if Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot, pictured) might
go and steal the show from under their aquiline noses, but then she, erm, doesn’t
The BASIC story, buried under a jumble of half-formed ideas, semi-realised, has Batman’s alter ego, billionaire Bruce Wayne, and his loyal butler Alfred
(an unshaven, most un-butlerlike Jeremy Irons), becoming
as intrigued as everyone else on the planet by Superman’s exploits and
motives.
The fellow with underpants over his tights, aka newspaperman Clark Kent, has an admirable habit of rescuing folk, but seems rather too powerful for
his own good, and is duly the subject of an official government
investigation chaired by Senator Finch (Holly Hunter).
In fact, they should all be much more worried about the dastardly schemes of
Wayne’s fellow billionaire Lex Luthor (a suitably nutty, tic-laden performance by Jesse Eisenberg), who finally contrives a way of forcing the two superheroes to engage in gladiatorial combat.
I sat up just a bit at the hint of a neat right-on joke when it looks as if Wonder Woman (Gal
Gadot) might go and steal the show from under their aquiline noses, but then she, erm,
doesn’t.
Otherwise, there are a few nice moments, but so there jolly well should be, considering
the budget was reportedly in the region of $410 million — nearly £300 million — making it one of the
most expensive movies ever made.
Besides, the nice moments tend to be the quieter ones, like a fully clothed Clark Kent and a
naked Lois Lane (Amy Adams) canoodling in the bath.
Of course, superhero films are excessive by definition. But an excess of plot never helped anyone.
As the action lurches around the globe, from the Indian Ocean to Africa to Paris to a windy mountain-top where Superman bumps
into his old dad (a pointless cameo by Kevin Costner), and back to the blighted twin cities of Gotham
and Metropolis, I felt increasingly as though Snyder and his screenwriters
(don’t take a bow, Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer) were on their own private joyride, and to
hell with the rest of us.
This is the second film in the so-called DC
Extended Universe franchise, following 2013’s Man Of Steel,
also directed by Snyder. There are many more yet to come.
But if they don’t get better, if the folk behind them don’t realise, as the Marvel crowd have,
that superheroes and solemnity do not mix, then not even Superman will be able to drag Warner Brothers,
the studio behind this absurdly bloated exercise, out of the mire.
Zootropolis (PG)
Rating:
From Metropolis to Zootropolis, and here is a film,
directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore and writer Jared Bush,
to brighten up anybody’s Easter weekend.
Disney have almost 90 years of form in anthropomorphising animals,
but they have rarely done it with as much wit as in this funny,
charming, gripping, altogether delightful animation, about a rabbit, Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin),
who grows up in Bunny Burrow yearning to be a cop even though her parents and 275 brothers
and sisters are content with being rural carrot farmers.
Disney have almost 90 years of form in anthropomorphising animals,

delightful animation, about a rabbit
Judy duly realises her dream, thanks to the police academy’s Mammal Inclusion Initiative in the nearby city of Zootropolis, ‘where anyone can be
anything’.
That’s true enough: the mayor is a lion (J.K. Simmons), the police chief
is a buffalo (Idris Elba), and the most famous pop star is a gazelle, called Gazelle
(Shakira).
Zootropolis has no human beings, but it is a hotbed
of crime and corruption even without human intervention, and there’s something particularly
sinister going on: previously sociable animals are turning rabidly aggressive.
Judy and her friend Nick Wilde, a fox (Jason Bateman), must find out why and how.
What’s especially wonderful about this film (which in the U.S.
is called Zootopia, a much better title) is the way it will appeal
across the generations.

Children will love it for the talking animals,
but there are some priceless gags for grown-ups, including an office full of bureaucratic sloths, who take forever even to utter a sentence,
and lots of perky references to classic films and TV
shows such as Breaking Bad and, hilariously, The
Godfather.
It even packs the profound and timely message that all the species should shrug off prejudices
and preconceptions about each other and try to
get along, but in a playful rather than sanctimonious way.
I watched it in a roomful of film critics, never the easiest bunch to please, yet the auditorium, with not a child in sight, resounded with laughter throughout.

Zootropolis (PG)
Rating:
Zootropolis is a story about the struggles of society
and overcoming who you are on the outside and becoming a better person – all
told by talking animals.
When the first bunny cop Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) leaves her
home and moves to the vast city of Zootropolis, where anyone can be anything,
her high hopes are lowered when she gets parking duty.
She meets a sly fox con-artist called Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) who has to team up with
Judy to solve the case of a missing otter. As the case deepens,
it reveals that there is more to it than had been expected…
When a city itself is the name of a movie, it has to have character.
And the city of Zootropolis has enough character to float a boat.
The architecture is amazing. From the rainforest district
and ice neighbourhood to the travel tubes that the hamsters whizz through, the
city manages to provide a home for everyone.
One of the best scenes is with the sloths, which will soon be a classic.
It is funny because everyone gets so impatient when things take so
long — and the sloths take forever to do everything.
People in the cinema laughed out loud.
My younger brother and sister didn’t notice, but the film is littered with references to previous movies, and there is a great
Frozen joke with duke Weaselton (bravo Disney) and his shop of pirated films — Wreck-it Rhino and Pig Hero 6 — plus clues to future Disney films Moana and Gigantic.
Overall, Zootropolis is a funny movie.
But one question remains, if every creature in the city is equal, what do the carnivores eat?

Swiss vote to impose world’s strictest rules on executive pay after
public outcry over fat cat bonuses
People in Switzerland have voted for strict controls on executive pay
68 per cent backed plans to veto pay-outs to bosses
Move sparked by anger over the big bonuses blamed for fuelling risky investments
It comes after the EU announced plan to cap bankers’ bonuses at a year’s pay

Swiss citizens have voted to impose some of the world’s strictest controls on executive pay.
Early returns in a referendum revealed 68 per cent
backed plans for shareholders to veto executive pay and for a
ban on big rewards for new and departing managers.
The clear majority came as a surprise given fierce opposition and intense campaigning by business lobby group Economiesuisse, which warned the proposals will damage
the country’s competitiveness and scare away international
talent.
Support for the move was sparked by anger over the big bonuses blamed
for fuelling risky investments that nearly felled Swiss bank UBS,
as well as outrage over a proposed $78 million payment to
outgoing Novartis chairman Daniel Vasella.
Claude Longchamp, of pollsters Gfs.Bern, said the public outcry last month that forced Novartis to cancel Vasella’s ‘golden goodbye’ helped
drive the campaign.
The Swiss vote for stricter rules on execuitve pay
was sparked by outrage over a proposed $78 million payment to outgoing
chairman of drugs company Novartis Daniel Vasella (pictured)
‘It emotionalised and it mobilised,’ he said.
Thomas Minder, the businessman-turned-politician behind the campaign, says his proposals are aimed
at ending a culture of short-termism and rewards for managers of badly-run companies rather
than just capping salaries.

Despite threats from some executives, Switzerland is unlikely to see an exodus of big companies who have previously
been drawn to the country by low taxes, stable politics and business-friendly laws.
And companies will seek ways around the new rules to reward executives, just as banks
in Europe are looking to soften the impact of a cap on bonuses for top
staff agreed by European politicians on Thursday.
The Swiss vote comes as the European Union tries to push
through a proposal which will mean bankers bonuses will be capped at
a year’s pay and a perk of two years’ salary could only be paid if a majority of shareholders agreed to it.
Downing Street said Prime Minister David Cameron had ‘real concerns’ about the plans and warned it must
not be allowed to stifle Britain’s role as a global banking
centre.
Chancellor George Osborne (left) is expected to argue against the European Union’s plans to cap bankers’ bonuses at a
year’s pay. Prime Minister David Cameron (right) said he had ‘real concerns’ about the plans
The deal must be signed off by EU governments before coming
into force next year but Chancellor George Osborne is expected to argue
against it at a meeting of European finance ministers next year.
Boris Johnson joined the chorus of British opposition, branding the
plans ‘deluded’ and ‘self-defeating’.
The London Mayor warned it would simply play into the hands of the City
of London’s overseas.
Mr Osborne is expected to try to block the plans, claiming it would prevent City firms hiring the best
staff, prompting an exodus of top talent to New York.
The deal must still be signed-off by EU governments before coming into force in 2014 but the UK
is struggling to convince other countries it is a bad idea.
If Britain loses its showdown with Brussels, it would mean the most draconian clampdown on fat cats’ perks since the
financial crisis of 2008.
Swiss companies accounted for five of the top 10 best-paid chairmen in Europe in 2011,
but only the heads of Novartis and Roche made it into the continent’s
top 10 for chief executives.
While anger at multi-million dollar payouts for executives has spread around the globe since the financial crisis,
the Swiss system of direct democracy means populist proposals
have a greater chance of implementation.
Swiss citizens get to vote on a range of topics in up to
four national referendums each year.
A few other countries, including the United States and Germany, have introduced
advisory ‘say on pay’ votes in response to anger over inequality and corporate
excess.
Britain is also planning to give shareholders a binding vote on pay
and ‘exit payments’ at least every three years.
The near collapse of flagship bank UBS in 2008 stoked
anger among Swiss who blamed its heavy losses on rewarding bankers to make risky bets
Thomas Minder’s initiative in Switzerland forces binding votes
on compensation every year as well as on board composition and
would also ban bonus payments to managers if their companies are taken over.
The plan also includes possible jail sentences and fines
for breaching the new rules.
While Switzerland has fared relatively well through the financial crisis, the near collapse of flagship
bank UBS in 2008 stoked anger among Swiss who blamed its heavy losses
on rewarding bankers to make risky bets.
Last year, more than one third of UBS shareholders rejected
the bank’s plans for executive pay – including a 4 million franc signing-on fee for new German chairman Axel Weber
– after a sub-par 2011 profit and a $2 billion rogue trading scandal.
The centre-left Social Democrats are already pushing for another referendum on even tougher
curbs on executive pay – they want to limit the
annual compensation of top managers to just 12 times that of their lowest-paid worker.
However, there are plenty of people that know precisely what it suggests to
be depressed.

Aussie actor Russell Crowe has always worn his heart on his sleeve – sometimes to his detriment – but he has vowed to reel it
in when watching his beloved Souths play NRL matches from now on.
Crowe became a co-owner of the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2006, alongside businessman Peter Holmes à Court,
with the aim of revitalising the NRL club that was struggling at the
time.
Under his leadership, the Rabbitohs achieved financial stability and secured a premiership
victory in 2014, ending a 43-year drought.
Crowe was instrumental in recruiting star players like Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis to the team, which significantly improved their performance.
He has often been seen passionately supporting the Rabbitohs at games,
with media capturing moments of his animated reactions during key matches.
However the Gladiator star has vowed to show more of a poker
face at future games for one big reason.
Hollywood actor Russell Crowe is a part owner of
the South Sydney Rabbitohs and is a constant figure in the stands of home games
Crowe bought into the club in 2006 and has been a passionate supporter of the club since he was a child
Crowe, who was instrumental in bringing premiership players
like Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess (pictured) to
the club, has vowed to temper his emotions from now on
‘Nah [losing doesn’t impact my mood]…it is what it is, I can’t affect that outcome so
you sort of just have to accept what’s going on,’ he told
Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie.
‘A long time ago when I’d be going to Rabbitohs games when my kids were little and stuff, and I realised that by
showing my passion in the grandstands was potentially giving the media outlets a way of mentally affecting the team.
‘There was all these photos of me strangling the imaginary referee.
‘So, I thought, ‘I’m gonna stop doing that’. I’d go
to a game and see what happens then I’d go backstage and you can swear.
‘But when I’m watching the game, I try and keep my cool…because you know
I think about it from the players’ perspective.
They don’t want to see the boss looking like he’s pissed off in the Monday newspaper.
So you’ve got to be cool about it.’
Souths fans – including Crowe – endured a torrid 2024 season, finishing 16th with a 7-17 record.
Injuries and suspensions played their part but defensive frailties were the biggest issue, with the
Rabbitohs conceding an average of 28.4 points per game – their worst since 2006.
The Rabbitohs have gone back to the future by sacking coach Jason Demetriou and re-instating former mentor Wayne Bennett
Souths fans will be hoping to see a fit and firing Latrell Mitchell back
on the park next season
Injuries compounded their struggles, with key players like Campbell Graham missing the
entire season and Latrell Mitchell limited to 11 appearances.
The season’s disappointments led to the dismissal of coach Jason Demetriou, with Wayne
Bennett set to return as head coach in 2025.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Rabbitohs have bolstered their roster by signing English halfback Lewis Dodd, Euan Aitken and Josh Schuster.
The 2025 season kicks off with a match against Bennett’s former club the
Dolphins.

An affair with Olivier, accused of murdering her toyboy…
now the craziest twist yet for Sarah Miles as she opens spiritual healing clinic

The solid oak door of England’s smallest manor house creaks open and a fey little woman beckons me into the low-beamed kitchen built around
the time of the Norman Conquest.
‘Fancy a cuppa? Earl Grey or PG Tips?’ smiles the
pixie-like figure, who wears a ragged peach cardigan and a grubby linen skirt (from a local charity shop; the source of all her clothes, she later informs me proudly) and nothing on her veiny
feet.
I am then invited to choose a mug from the rack.
If this is some cleverly staged game designed to remind me of my septuagenarian host’s former glories, it
works.

Now aged 71, Sarah has renamed her Sussex home as the Chithurst Manor Healing Centre,
and – partnered by her youthful lodger, Ian Delves

For my eyes are drawn to the one decorated with a face both beautiful
and — to those of us of a certain age — instantly recognisable: that of actress
Sarah Miles as she looked during the Sixties and Seventies, in a string of daring film roles that pushed the barriers of sexual candour.
Back then the doe-eyed, pouting Miss Miles vied with Julie
Christie and Susannah York as our most beguiling big-screen seductress.
And she embarked on a series of very public affairs, some with her much older leading men.

Among them were Laurence Olivier, opposite whom she
starred in Term Of Trial, the debut movie that brought her to fame in 1962, when she was 21 (he was a troubled
headmaster, she was his not-so-naïve pupil); and Robert Mitchum, the brooding
husband she betrayed in the 1970 blockbuster Ryan’s Daughter, for which she received an Oscar nomination.
In ‘a very dark period’ of her life, Miss Miles also
became fatefully involved with a young American writer
who was mysteriously found dead in her hotel room after they had quarrelled — prompting accusations that she had murdered him.
Sarah Miles embarked on a series of very public affairs, some
with her much older leading men. Among them were Laurence Olivier,
opposite whom she starred in Term Of Trial
(above), the debut movie that brought her to fame in 1962, when she was 21
However, her true ‘soul-mate’ was the brilliant screenwriter and playwright Robert Bolt, whom she twice married (having once divorced) and
nursed with selfless devotion as he suffered a series of strokes.
When Bolt died in 1995, she adhered to his irreverent funeral
plans, meditating beside his body for two days with friends, staging a joyful wake with champagne and musicians, and burying him in a huge scarlet gown and pink scarf, in a
cardboard coffin sunk beyond the croquet lawn in the grounds of their home.
Every day she trips down the garden to perch on a log
beside her late husband’s mossy memorial stone —
inscribed with the title of his most famous
play, A Man For All Seasons — to ‘share my problems with him and tell
him what’s going on’.
Recently, she has been seeking his guidance on a daunting new venture.
Two weeks ago, having pondered the idea for the best
part of three decades, she renamed her Sussex home as the Chithurst Manor Healing
Centre, and — partnered by her youthful lodger, Ian Delves
— officially opened for business as an alternative healer and therapist.
Romance: Sarah was previously married twice to late screenwriter
Robert Bolt, by whom she has son Tom (pictured together in 1985)
Perhaps ‘business’ wouldn’t be the word she would
choose — for, as she tells me when we settle in the sun-bathed conservatory that
will serve as her consulting room, they won’t charge for the various treatments on offer (from massage to spiritual healing), they will just ask for donations and rely
on their clients’ good will.
Though hardly on her uppers, she could plainly use their generosity.
She earned surprisingly little from her films, and she and
Bolt were divorced when he made his will.
‘I must have taken a vow of poverty or something!’ she exclaims, confiding that she can’t afford to
turn on the draughty manor’s central heating in winter.
Miss Miles is given to making rather melodramatic declamations such
as this; but then hers has been a melodramatic life.
One of four siblings who still address one another with their childhood nicknames —- Pooker, Chuzzer, Jules
and Puss Cat (Sarah) — she was born into a well-heeled Essex family who sent her to the top girls’ public school, Roedean.
Always rebellious, she was quickly expelled but found her calling when her mother, having been impressed
by her performance in a play, got her into RADA.
She tells me earnestly that her ambition was to be a comedian, and it was only after her agent insisted she should audition for the sexually awakened schoolgirl part in Term Of Trial that she was acclaimed as England’s latest sex siren.
The actress had an affair with Robert Mitchum, the brooding husband she betrayed in the 1970 blockbuster Ryan’s Daughter, for which she received an Oscar nomination
It was during the movie shoot, in a Parisian hotel, that
she and Olivier, then in his mid-50s and recently married to his second wife, the actress Joan Plowright, embarked
on their first affair.
It lasted two years, but although she had other lovers, such as the hell-raising actor Nicol Williamson and Steven Spielberg, she returned
to Olivier more than once, and they remained close until his death, 24
years ago next month.
She met the Manchester-born, Left-wing Bolt at a party and within 18
months, dazzled by his towering intellect, they were married.
They were travelling in India, where he was researching an abortive screenplay for
the film Gandhi, when her fascination with alternative therapies was stirred —- albeit
by a practice which would make many people retch.
‘Drinking your own urine is wonderful for your skin, fantastic for
your hair, your immune system — it’s fantastic for everything!’
Visiting Gandhi’s ashram, she recalls, she met one of his followers and was astonished to learn the woman was 85 years old, when she looked 60 at
most.
Asked how she retained her youthful complexion, the woman said it was down to drinking a daily
dose of her own urine: something Gandhi strongly advocated.
‘When she told me this, I thought “Euugh!” I was disgusted
— just like everybody else,’ she laughs.
But a few years later, when she consulted a therapist about
her recurring nasal allergies and he, too, recommended ‘urine therapy’, she followed his advice.
The effects were ‘like wow!’ she exclaims, and so she has been drinking it ever since.
When I tell her about my arthritic knees she urges me to give it a go.
‘Listen to me — what you smell has nothing do
with the taste,’ she chides. ‘It’s like a nice gentle beer!
‘It’s wonderful for your skin, fantastic for your hair, your immune system — it’s fantastic for
everything!
‘It gives you an immediate high. Just try it!’ Thanks,
but I think I’ll stick with the PG Tips.
Whether or not it’s down to her daily tot, she certainly looks younger than her 71 years.
Though she was hit by a bus while crossing Trafalgar Square two years ago and has had two hip replacements and a pin in her
shoulder, she is also a picture of health — the perfect advertisement for
the new centre.
Sarah’s son Tom Bolt, a heroin addict in his mid-teens, has turned his life around
and is now a millionaire expert on antique watches, as well as a judge on the Channel
4 antiques show Four Rooms
Still, from the night the late Robert Mitchum recklessly unveiled
her then secret habit — during a talk at the National Theatre many years ago, she vaguely recalls — she
was exposed to lifelong ridicule and, she is convinced, her
career was damaged.
‘People are very, very strange about it. When it first came into the Press, people used to pass by me as if I was a smelly bag-lady.
It was really terrible. I had letters calling me
an evil witch.’
But the episode which dealt a near-mortal blow
to her reputation was the mysterious death in 1973 of the American writer David
Whiting, 24.
Quite why Miss Miles, then at the height of her fame and married to Bolt, succumbed to the
sexual advances of the nerdish, obsessive Whiting, who styled himself on the Great Gatsby, right down to the wide-lapelled, pin-striped suits, is a
matter she declines to discuss.
When she ended their affair while filming in Arizona, Whiting (by then employed as her business manager) beat her up in the cast’s hotel.
Miss Miles escaped, and when she returned she found him dead.
Protected by the Hollywood establishment, she was spared police questioning and testifying at the inquest, where it was ruled that Whiting had taken an overdose, even though he had swallowed just a couple of Mandrax tablets and had wounds on his
body.
As the scandal unfolded her parents were hounded out of their Essex village, she was branded a femme
fatale, and, she says, one British paper even accused her outright of murder.
‘I was the scapegoat and the only thing that kept me sane was
my innocence,’ she declares, suddenly fixing me with that familiar, wild-eyed
gaze.
Does she now think it was foul play? ‘I’m afraid — yes,’ she replies knowingly, then stops.
‘It was a dark period. I don’t really want to delve into the darkness.’
Comfortably back in the light again, she remembers how
her gift for healing was discovered by chance, by a famous
American spiritual healer, Kathryn Kuhlman, who felt the energy coming from her as they stood
side by side in a lift during the early Seventies.
Sarah’s gift for healing was discovered by chance, by a famous
American spiritual healer, Kathryn Kuhlman, who felt the energy coming from her
as they stood side by side in a lift during the early Seventies
Kuhlman, who had her own TV show called Believe In Miracles, and a massive U.S.
following, had immediately sensed her special gift and said:
‘You’ve got it! Just do it!’
At first the actress thought she was ‘a nutter’. But she gradually came to realise she
could channel healing energy by laying her hands directly on someone,
or by holding them slightly away and curing them with her ‘etheric aura’.
She has been healing family members and close friends
for years (Robert Bolt was given only two years to live after his stroke, yet under her care he survived
for 14, she says). But now she will offer her services to all-comers at
the centre.
It will also provide meditation and retreat sessions, and other holistic therapies.
The realisation that she had a higher purpose than acting — the
moment she calls her ‘epiphany’ — came a few years later, when she was filming The Sailor Who
Fell From Grace With The Sea and was required
to play an emotionally gruelling erotic scene.
Drawing on all her powers, she managed it, but
afterwards, as she walked home, she says she was stricken by a
life-changing experience: an ‘inner echo’ which seemed to expose the very workings of the universe to
her.
People can mock her, and frequently have, she
smiles, but she has reached the stage where she no longer cares what people think of
her, and she feels that after almost 30 years she
is ready to use her ‘gifts’ for the common good.
And why not, I say. After an entertaining afternoon in her company
I certainly felt much better, a touch daffy though some of her homespun philosophy might
be.
Particularly amusing was her description of the moment she glanced at
Tony Blair’s upturned hands (as they chatted during David Frost’s annual midsummer party) and saw, to her horror, that
the ‘head’ and ‘heart’ lines on both his palms were joined together.
People who have these so-called ‘simian lines’ on just one hand are often geniuses, it is said.
But those rare people who have them on both can be megalomaniacs or worse.
‘Blair hadn’t yet become Prime Minister and everyone was still in love with him,’ she recalls.
‘It sent a shiver down my spine.’
It was also uplifting to hear how her son, Tom Bolt, now 45, has turned
his life around. In his mid-teens he became
a heroin addict and, after he attempted to sell his parents’
acting trophies and forge their cheques to feed his habit, they resorted to ‘tough love’ by shopping him to the police.
Now the father of her adored 12-year-old grandson,
Billy, he has since become a millionaire expert on antique watches, and is also
a judge on the Channel 4 antiques show Four Rooms.
She’s clearly proud of his success, but equally happy
she is now following what she feels is her true calling.
Beneath his mossy headstone, Sarah Miles believes
her Man For All Seasons will be smiling.

Antonio Conte’s time as Chelsea manager came to an end on Thursday with Maurizio Sarri poised to take over.
There was no confirmation from Stamford Bridge of Conte’s exit but
an afternoon training session was cancelled as the change moved a step closer.
Cesc Fabregas and former captain John Terry were quick to post messages of thanks on social media, although several Chelsea players were
known to be considering their futures at the club if the manager had stayed.

Chelsea have agreed a compensation package which could be worth up to £9million with
Conte, who had one year left on his contract.
They are in the process of clearing out his backroom staff
so former Napoli boss Sarri can start ahead of the first pre-season fixture in Australia a week on Monday.
Gianfranco Zola will return to Chelsea on Sarri’s staff.
Fitness coach Chris Jones is expected to leave to team up with Frank Lampard
at Derby.
Chelsea have been casting around for successors to Conte since midway
through last season. The 48-year-old Italian won the
Premier League title in his first season and the
FA Cup in his second but his relationship
with the board was damaged beyond repair last summer.

American Airlines will be flying some of Hollywood’s biggest stars from LA and New York
to London for Sunday’s Baftas.
Here MailOnline Travel offers a tantalising behind-the-scenes look at
the VIP travel service A-listers will be treated to during their journey.
The airline claims it ‘has Hollywood luxury all wrapped up’.
Does it? Well, here’s the evidence – from being chauffeured across the tarmac from the plane to the terminal, to unlimited champagne
and in-flight DIY ice cream sundae menus.
Arriving at LAX
American Airlines will be flying some of Hollywood’s biggest stars
from LA and New York to London for this Sunday’s Baftas.
The airline offers a range of premium services catering to
celebrities, such as chauffeured cars to the plane

American Airline’s exclusive Five Star Service. After an expedited check-in service they will be escorted to the comfort of a brand new lounge area called ‘Flagship’, which

Luxury service from the get go
American Airlines wouldn’t reveal who will be boarding
its planes this awards season due to privacy reasons.
But potential customers are Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Amy Adams
and Emma Stone – they’re all Bafta nominees.
As soon as Hollywood’s elite arrive at LAX, whether they’ve
bought a business or first class ticket, will be treated to American Airline’s exclusive
‘Five Star Service’.
In the Flagship lounge customers can enjoy a range of food
options including a ‘robust’ food buffet and a chef station with freshly made-to-order dishes.
They can pair their meals with premium wines, champagne, and
spirits, or concoct a refreshing drink at the ‘build your own cocktail’ station
If flying in first class, travellers will be able to
access a premium dining service with restaurant-worthy dishes rustled up
They will be met curbside and taken to an exclusive
check-in area, where they can avoid being hassled by media.
Then they get to skip to the front of the security lines.
The stars will then be escorted to the comfort of a brand new lounge area called ‘Flagship’, which opened last year as part of a
$200 million investment at LAX.

To get into the celebratory mood, they can also indulge in craft spirits and specially-designed cocktails –
which aren’t on offer to business passengers.
Stars will be collected from the lounge by an attendant, shuttled to the
plane across the tarmac in a luxury car and will board the aircraft before other
passengers.
A private jet-style aircraft
Offering celebrities a private jet-style service from Los
Angeles to New York, AA has reduced the number of seats on board its Airbus A321T (pictured).
The plane offers plenty of room with just 102 seats, while other airlines flying
the same model pack the space out with up to 230 seats
AA says that many stars flying from Los Angeles choose to stop in New York on their way to meet with agents or take part
in photo shoots.
If they do this AA says the Bafta nominees will be treated to ‘private jet-style service’ on board an Airbus A321T.
The airline has installed just 102 seats on the aircraft, while other airlines flying the
same model pack the space out with up to 230 seats.
For stars who have snagged first class tickets – these start from $1,993 (£1,538) one
way – AA says they can expect A-list treatment all the way.
Let’s begin with the seats – there are just ten, measuring
21 inches wide, and they all lay flat and have direct
aisle access.
Then there’s the fodder, which is sure to make the stars salivate.
AA says the first class menu features restaurant-worthy dishes, such as filet mignon, chicken cacciatore, braised Tuscan beef stew and native lobster with fennel salad.
And, if they’re not too worried about fitting into their Bafta outfits,
the stars might want to check out AA’s popular sundae service, which means they can design their
own ice creams.
The first class section on board AA’s Airbus A321T is very private with ten ‘all aisle
access’ seats. These extend to form lie-flat beds and plush bedding sets are provided
so passengers can pack in a spot of beauty sleep
In both business (above) and first class on the A321T there is WiFi and TV
screens with power outlets, so celebrities can keep up to date with their Twitter accounts while they fly
Those travelling in business class, where tickets start from $1,199 (£925),
will be pleased to note that they can also indulge in this novel dessert
service.
And they get a good sense of privacy, because there are just 20 seats in the cabin, measuring 19
inches across.
These also extend to flat beds but they don’t provide all-aisle access as in the first class area.
Although there isn’t lobster and filet mignon on the menu in business, the food offering is still pretty appetising and AA
says current menu items include red snapper tagine and braised short ribs.
In both business and first class on the A321T passengers get Bose noise cancelling headphones, WiFi access and TV screens with power outlets.
For a spot of beautification there are amenity bags
by luxury accessories brand Cole Haan stuffed with products from C.O.
Bigelow. These lotions and potions vary slightly between business and first.
Meanwhile, all passengers are provided with plush
duvet and pillow sets by Casper, to aid that all-important
beauty sleep.
The flight across the Atlantic
AA’s Boeing 777-300 flies from Los Angeles and New York
direct to London
As with the Airbus A321T, mouth-watering meals are served in business and in first class and there is a dine-on-demand service so that passengers can eat when they please
For the journey across the Atlantic, whether it’s from LA or New York, our gong hopefuls will step on board a Boeing 777-300.
If they’ve plumped for first class – which costs from $13,148 (£10,143) Los Angeles to London and $9,693 (£7,478) New York to London – they’re
in for the ultimate in sky high luxury.
There are just eight seats in the first class compartment, measuring
21.5 inches wide and, as with the other aircraft, these extend to flat beds and have direct aisle
access.
Those paying the extra whack can indulge in a dine-on-demand service, meaning they can get meals curated by award-winning chef
Sam Choy delivered whenever they please.

the flight
In first class on AA’s Boeing 777-300 passengers will get
luxury bedding to optimise their comfort. These Casper sleep
sets include a mattress pad, lumbar pillow, blanket, duvet,
two pillows, eyemask, slippers and pyjamas
Crossing the transatlantic like a star certainly requires deep pockets, as a return ticket from
Los Angeles to London in business class starts at $10,156 (£7,835) and runs up
to $13,148 (£10,143) for a spot in first class. Above, a picture of the first class cabin
Those jet-setting in first class will also get luxury
Casper bedding to optimise their comfort.
These sleep sets include a mattress pad, lumbar pillow, blanket, duvet, two pillows, eye mask, slippers and pyjamas.
Furthering the lure of first class, the seats on the AA Boeing
777-300 can swivel.
This means passengers can turn the space into a work station,
with the seat rotating towards a desk.
Alternatively, the chairs can be swivelled 180 degrees allowing passengers
to dine together.
Business class isn’t too shabby, either.
The business class section on AA’s Boeing 777-30 is bigger
than average with 52 seats to ensure all stars (and their entourages) can be accommodated.

On the comfort front, the stars can indulge in an array of lotions and potions from leading skincare brand C.O.
