Plan International, Partners Signed LWEP MOU

MONROVIA – Plan International Liberia, a lead service provider, and partners yesterday, February 19, 2025 signed an MOU for the implementation of an $18 million Liberia Women Project (LWEP).

The Liberia Women Empowerment Project Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Plan International, Medica Liberia, Defence for Children International Liberia, and others with six (6) counties benefiting.

The fund was provided by World Bank through the government of Liberia.        

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Congo Town, Plan International Sub-Regional Interim Director Evariste Sindayigaya said, “We are here today for the women, and all women should stand strong and be creative in global change. We want to enhance women to be able to go to school, to learn skills and knowledge so that they can stand on their own when they are women, when they are mothers and most importantly so they can grow in safe and inclusive environment.”

The PI chief sad further: “We sign this contract agreement so that we can go and support our mothers and sisters in their communities, and we are today because these opportunities will help in Liberia.”

The Plan International Sub-Regional Director Evariste Sindayigaya noted by saying, “We want encourage everyone to go and invest in our governance structure as an association that we engage on regular basic. Go and invest in the risk management, we go and mobilized on financially and put in place monitoring evaluation system so that we can monitor and report accordingly.”

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Deputy Minister Laura Golakeh said, “the grant you are about to signed today was made possible through the government of Liberia and it is in two foe grant and loan. This is money that the government of Liberia has borrowed, certain portion of it to be able to capacitate their women.”

She noted that this is a way of empowering the Liberia women to achieve gender equality, warning the grantees that the money should be used for the intended purpose.

For her part, the Country Director of Plan International Liberia Madam Miriam Murray noted the project was for women empowerment, an evidence of the struggle of women.

“You need that struggle to make the foundation, to say ‘I shall make it’. We thank the government of Liberia for committing to funding from donors.”

According to Madam Murray, It is not a grant, but a loan, which they have to pay back but because of their people, they invested that risk, and that is how the government should work for the people that voted.
