PAL Welcomes Supreme Court Seizure of House Imbroglio -Admonishes Media Colleagues from Inflaming Situations
MONROVIA – Democracy is different from aristocratic or authoritarian rule, and the difference is often found in the rule of law, due process with courts interventions in a democracy, while jungle justice, arbitrariness is the order of autocracy. It is not a surprise that in the political feud taking place on Capitol Hill, the parties are often brought to attention by the Supreme Court, something that is cheered by one of the country’s media bodies, the Publishers Association of Liberia, as The Analyst reports.
The Publishers Association of Liberia says it agrees with the Supreme Court of Liberia in calling for the return to status quo ante in the matter involving members of the House of Representatives – Majority and Minority blocs.
In a press release issued over the weekend, PAL said it was concerned about the unfolding events at the National Legislature, the first branch of Government, regarding the prolonged standoff between the majority and minority blocs.
According to the media association, the House internal crisis has affected legislative functions and the governance of the state.
As the supreme court is the final arbiter of justice in the land, PAL is calling on all parties to respect the decision of the supreme court and the rule of law.
Meanwhile, the PAL is at the same time calling on its members and all media institutions to avoid inflaming the already fragile situation.
“Doing so has the propensity to undermine the security of the state and our fragile democracy,” the journalist organization said.
