Opposition Disparages Assassination Plot

Addressing dozens of members, supporters and well-wishers who gathered on February 21, 2019 to commemorate the signing of a Commitment of Collaboration, Liberia’s mainstream opposition political parties denounced claims by the Chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Mr.  Mulbah K. Morlu and others, that there is no and will never be any plan to assassinate President, Dr. George Manneh Weah. reports John Dennis Weah, Jr.

Taking podium first at the occasion, the Unity Party’s Standard Bearer Joseph Boakai called on all the opposition collaborating parties to serve as agents of peace and reconciliation, indicating that partisans and supporters of their collaboration are agents of positive transformation and non-violent.

Ambassador Boakai also picked the issue of assassination blazing from the ruling establishment and noted, “it is my wish that Liberia will never go back to its dark past,” adding that Liberia seems to be going down a disturbing path; and that as Liberians, it should be our concern instead of somebody thinking of assassinating a sitting President.

The much publicized alleged assassination of President Weah was reportedly repeated by President Weah at the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church recently held in Gbarnga, Bong County.

’No one within the UP, ANC, ALP and the LP has the plan to assassinate President Weah or any national leader,” the alleged claim was disclaimed by VP Boakai.

The assassination attempt claim by CDC is dangerous and reprehensive in the wake of numerous concerns and current difficulties faced by Liberians including the level of hardship, public corruption, suppression of press freedom and all other vices opposed by the opposition.

Also speaking was the former standard bearer of the opposition Liberty Party Cllr. Charles W. Brumskine who expressed gratitude about the signing of the commitment and buttressed previous speakers that no matter what, not one of their collaborating members has any intent to assassinate President Weah as it has been rumored.

Notwithstanding, Cllr Brumskine wondered why the statement levied against the opposition by the CDC was broadcast or publicized without considering that it presents a negative image to investors and other international partners as well.

The Standard Bearer of the Alternative National Congress, Alexander Cummings, and Benoni Urey have all disclaimed allegation of the purported assassination claim and stated that the opposition was against loss of anyone’s life, saying that the opposition is about positive change in the society.
