MONROVIA – As the scramble for relevance escalates among political parties to show who’s who within the current political dispensation that will showcase strategies and numerical strengths to woo them into the fold of either the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) of incumbent President George Manneh Weah; or the opposition camp comprising former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s Unity Party or Alexander Cummings’ Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), information reaching The Analyst from insiders of the People’s Unification Party (PUP) indicate that stalwarts of the Party headed by its Political Leader, Emmanuel Nuquay have mortgaged their political institution to the ruling CDC for US$3million.
According to well-informed sources Margibi County Senator Emmanuel Nuquay who is the mastermind of the plan and Representative Edward W. Karfiah of Bong County, both of the PUP, intensively lobbied to get US$3 Million in the national budget to carry out their agenda of support to the CDC.
The inside sources further indicated that the PUP Standard Bearer Emmanuel Nuquay, along with members of the Governing Council hijacked the party and yesterday conducted an “illegal” meeting outside of its constitutional mandate, where a resolution was signed to endorse President Weah’s second term bid and received an initial amount of S$25,000 out of the USD$3million from the ruling CDC.
The meeting is said to have included PUP Political Leader Emmanuel Nuquay, four members of the Governing Council, sixteen members of the National Executive Committee and 10 county chairpersons.
“The distribution of the 25k was done at the Governing Council Chair Tokpah Mulbah’s residence, at Michael Francis Road,” the source indicated.
However, PUP Chairman and Nimba County Representative Samuel Kogar is said to have argued that a committee was set up to inform the CDC of the party’s position for support of the CDC that will lead to the 2023 presidential and general elections, instead, Mr. Nuquay and others decided to collect US$25,000 on behalf of the party and signed a resolution that will lead to endorsing the CDC.
Meanwhile, reacting to news that the PUP hierarchy had decided to endorse the CDC based on monetary benefits, PUP National Chairman Samuel Kogar wasted no time but to fire a letter to the Chairman of the PUP Governing Council, and copy Standard Bearer Nuquay, members of the Governing Council and the National Executive Committee.
According to the letter, PUP Chairman Kogar was especially concerned over a memorandum posted in the chatroom of the party, citing members of the Governing Council and the Executive Committee to a joint meeting of the two organs slated for Wednesday April 19, 2023 at 2:200PM, a communication that spurred his urgent reaction to what he termed as gross disregard of the PUP Constitution and By-Laws.
“Hon. Mulbah, in pursuant to Section 9.0 of the By-Laws and Constitution of the Party, the National Chairman of the Party shall be notified through a written communication before the scheduling of meetings,” Kogar’s letter stated.
According to Section 9.0 of the PUP Constitution, “Any official or member of the EC shall have the right to request a meeting regarding issues of importance for the growth and development of the PUP through a written communication to the National Chairperson. Said communication shall be delivered to the office of the National Chairperson, for working days to the proposed date of the meeting and shall be considered emergency”.
Furthermore, the memorandum in the PUP chartroom is unsupported by the constitution and, therefore, is illegitimate, Chairman Kogar’s letter indicated.
“As such, I am advising all members of the GC and EC to decline from attending the purported meeting until the constitutional requirement is met,” the letter from PUP National Chairman Kogar stated emphatically.
All efforts to get in touch with Senator Emmanuel Nuquay and key members of the PUP Governing Council last night proved futile up to press time.
