Ngafuan Pays Homage to USA -Says Liberia’s Story Contains More Chapters on Uncle Sam

While there may be cynicisms in some quarters about Liberia-United States relations, those who closely followed the two nation’s interlocking histories would admit the US has never left Liberia alone without showing a redemptive hand in times of need to what other people would its stepchild. The magnanimity of the US to Liberia during the last 200 years of relationship is once again amplified by a noted Liberian public servant, two-time Finance Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, recently nominated by President Joseph Boakai and firmed by the Senate as Minister of Finance and Development Planning briefly hosted at his office a delegation of American diplomats and development experts at which time he lavishly paid tribute to the US for its incredible support of Liberia. The Analyst reports.

A powerful delegation of United States’ diplomats paid a courtesy call on Liberia’s new Finance & Development Planning Minister, Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, extensively exalting the fond, healthy relationship between the two countries.

Former Foreign Minister asserted that the Liberia’s long story spanning, over 200 years including 177 years of independence, cannot completely be told or read without going through substantial chapters containing United States Government’s support to the country.

“America’s continuous support has been vital to our development,” he said, recalling contributions, that include efforts in restoring peace, waiving Liberia’s debt, and providing $257 million under the Millennium Challenge Corporation for the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee hydroelectric facility, as well as support during the Ebola crisis.

He continued: “America has always stood by our side as a strong partner in progress. We are grateful for your support and remain committed to working together. We look forward to strengthening partnership to advance Liberia’s agenda.”

The finance minister also reflected on the robust partnership between the two countries which continues to foster strategic relationships essential for generating innovative development ideas and addressing national challenges across key economic sectors.

“As Minister, I aspire to be a trustworthy strategic partner for the U.S. government, ensuring accountability in our collaboration,” he added.

Minister Ngafuan highlighted the importance of implementing tangible projects that would have a swift impact on the lives of ordinary Liberians.

“We are currently developing a new national development plan and budget, and it is crucial that these align to effectively address our nation’s needs,” he stressed.

For his part, Ambassador Toner boasted that U.S. is Liberia’s largest bilateral partner, recalling the significant support provided during the country’s recovery in 2003.

He commended Liberia for its successful democratic processes, including two recent presidential elections, which he described as a historic achievement in West Africa.

“The United States remains committed to building a strong and strategic relationship with Liberia as we support its development efforts,” Ambassador Toner asserted.

Also attending the meeting were USAID Acting Director, US Economic and Political Affairs Counsellor, and senior officials of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
