Liberia to observe Cooperative Day -FAO Country Director to serve as guest speaker -Pres. Weah To Deliver special message to farmers

Liberia will on July 20, 2019 join other countries around the world to observe the day of international Cooperative Development Agency. The day will be observe throughout the country as a working holiday.

In Presidential proclamation by President George M. Weah on Saturday July 6, 2019, the Liberia cooperative society will alongside the Cooperative Agency (CDA) join other cooperatives to celebrate with International Cooperative Societies worldwide in observance of the Day.

According to the press release, the Cooperative Day will be observe by the international Cooperative Development Agency under the theme: “Cooperative for Decent Work” which is meant to increase awareness about the functions of the cooperatives at both local and international levels, and is to also strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other supporting organizations, including government.

The proclamation calls on all citizens; government ministries and agencies as well as international organizations concerned to join the Cooperative Development Agency in executing appropriate programs in promoting the agenda of the cooperative.

The proclamation is in line with the 1936 Cooperative Societies Act enacted by the National Legislature of Liberia. The Act empowers the CDA to facilitate the grassroots organizations, farmer associations, and non-farmers base organizations including women and youth groupings into viable cooperative societies.

The historicity of the day dates back to December 16, 1992, when the General assembly of the United Nations proclaimed the first Saturday of July every year to be celebrated as International Day of Cooperatives worldwide.

Meanwhile the Registrar General for the Liberia’s Cooperative Development Agency (CDA), Madam Regina Sokan-Teah Williams has disclosed that the official celebrations of the International Cooperative Day will be held in Ganta City, Nimba County.

Speaking on a local talk-show in Monrovia, the CDA Boss said, the FAO Country Director to Liberia will serve as guest speaker while the President of the Republic of Liberia, George M. Weah, will give a special message to the farmers.
