MONROVIA – The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has vowed to ensuring transparency and regulatory best practices throughout the process of setting new tariff for electricity as proposed by the Liberia Electricity Corporation.
LEC submitted a complete application for new electricity tariffs for the LERC’s approval – tariff structure that covers the period August 1, 2025, to July 31, 2028, aligning with Section 8.1(2) of the 2015 Electricity Law of Liberia.
The law provides that “a licensee may not charge a customer any other tariff other than that determined or approved by the Regulator.
In December 2024, the Commission granted a request from the Interim Management Team (IMT) of LEC to withdraw the Corporation’s initial tariff application.
LEC had informed the Commission that the previous submission coincided with an internal transition, and the IMT was unfamiliar with the tariff application previously submitted by the former administration.
The Commission notes that the management of LEC proposes a new customer category “Government” in its submission. This category is in addition to its four previous customer categories Social, Residential, Non-residentials, and Medium Voltage. LEC’s operations cover Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, Grand Bassa and Margibi counties.
The Commission wishes to inform the public that the tariffs currently being paid by customers shall remain the same until the Commission announces a decision on the tariff proposal submitted by LEC.
To ensure transparency and public participation in the review of the tariff proposal, the Commission shall organize a series of public hearings, stakeholder engagements, and outreach initiatives. These forums will allow electricity consumers, policymakers, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to provide input before a final decision is made on the tariff structure proposed by LEC.
“The Commission is committed to ensuring transparency and regulatory best practices throughout the tariff-setting process,” stated Hon. Claude J. Katta, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.
