LCC Requests SC Clarification -Attributes Degenerating Capitol Crisis to Ambiguous SC Ruling

MONROVIA – Amidst mounting concerns about the Liberian civil society’s apathetic attitude towards the ongoing leadership crisis on Capitol Hill which degenerated to the burning of the Capitol Building on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) says it has been exhausting all avenues to mediate the crisis, to the extent that it recently requested clarification from the Supreme Court of Liberia to guide its position on the leadership crisis at the National Legislature, given the ambiguity of the Supreme Court’s recent decision that escalated the Capitol Hill fracas.

Voicing its disgust in an official statement issued Thursday, December 19, 2024, the LCC, through its President Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr., noted that in response to the Capitol Hill crisis, it has facilitated dialogue between the opposing parties, including a meeting at Providence Baptist Church, where both sides pledged to respect the rule of law.

“Despite this, the LCC is deeply concerned by their continued disregard for Supreme Court rulings. Given the ambiguity of the Supreme Court’s recent decision, the LCC has formally requested clarification to guide its position on the matter. Upholding the rule of law is paramount to maintaining peace and stability,” the LCC noted.

The faith-based civil society organization said it views the incident as a grave affront to democracy and urges the Ministry of Justice, through the Liberia National Police and the Liberia National Fire Service, to immediately conduct a thorough investigation. If arson is confirmed, those responsible must be held accountable.

The LCC used the occasion to also call on all Liberians to reject actions that undermine public institutions built with taxpayers’ contributions and international support. Liberia’s progress depends on unity, recovery, and reconciliation, free of hate, deceit, and self-interest; and urged all Liberians to remain calm and peaceful, allowing the legal process to prevail and protect Liberia’s fragile democracy.
