Vice President Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor has awarded 19 Scholarships to female students of the More Than Me Foundation in Monrovia. Presenting the scholarships to 19 female students, on behalf the Vice President, the Chairperson of the Jewel Star Fish Foundation, Madam Norwu Howard urged recipients the scholarships to be obedient and take advantage of the opportunity that the Vice President has provided them to achieve their goals.
Madam Norwu Howard indicated that the scholarships would be an avenue to better prepare the beneficiaries so as to be able to meaningfully contribute to the future of the country.
Ms. Howard also addressed the issue of funding supports to the Jewel Starfish Foundation and indicated that the Jewel Starfish Foundation is neither depending on nor using the government resources for funding, saying that the funding of the Jewel Starfish is rather coming from the donors partners that pledged to support Liberia and help to elevate Liberia from poverty.
Receiving the scholarships, the parents of the 19 students extended their thanks and appreciation to the Vice President for rescuing them from school fees bondages.
Some of the parents said the scholarship by Vice President Howard-Taylor was the first of its kind in the West Point Community whereby their children will have access to the opportunity of attending Institutions like CWA and Risk.
Also speaking, the Principal of the More Than Me Foundation, Lovetee Settro, said over the time, More Than Me has been facing difficulties because of the government’s order to close the School.
As a consequence, she said the Foundation has been worrying about how to have the Girls in school, and commended Vice President Howard-Taylor for her Continuous support towards girls’ education.
It can be recalled that serving as guest speaker during the graduation ceremony of the More Than Me Foundation in July 2019 at the Monrovia City Hall at the time, Madam Taylor promised that she would be responsible for the 19 students that graduated from Junior High and also assured the parents the students at More Than Me, that she will do all to appeal to donor partners for funding and some members of the legislature to ensure that More Than Me will not close down.
The Vice President then at the time promised to sponsor the students to Risk Institute. With the scholarships, the students be will part of the Jewel Starfish Foundation.
According to Madam Norwu, 13 of the students will be sponsored at the Risk Institute while the remaining six are being sponsored to attend the College of West Africa (CWA) in Monrovia.
The Jewel Starfish Foundation was established in 1999 by Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor who was at the time first Lady of the Republic Liberia, purposely to help Liberian girls achieve their educational dreams.
