MONROVIA – The 2003 general and presidential elections have since been over and many of those who made honeyed promises to citizens, both winners and losers, have concurrently turned their backs. Not all. One person, a loser, who is still keeping the promises made is former vice president of Liberia, Madam Jewel Howard Taylor. As THE ANALYST’S H. MATTHEW TURRAY reports, the vice standard bearer on the ticket of the Coalition for Democratic Change party has taken a modern water system to a suffering community.
In fulfillment of some of the promises made during the 2023 general and presidential elections, Liberia former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor on Sunday, May 18, 2025 dedicated and turned over a modern water system to the Cooper Farm Block-D Youth for Transformation (CFBDYT), in Cooper Farm Community, Paynesville.
Speaking at the turning over ceremony the former Liberia Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor recalled what particularly drew her attention on the last day of the 2023 campaign — when a lady told us the community people were walking a thirty-minutes distance to fetch a safe drinking water.
“That statement touched my heart,” he reflected. “Seeing a lady walking thirty minutes for safe drinking water to take care of her home was heart touching. And so I thought to myself that this is something that needed to do. I needed to erect a water system to help ease the water constrain here.”
Though the former vice president did not disclose the cost of the project, when quizzed about the total cost of the project, she simply explained: “There can be no value put on the importance of water. The value of providing water to this community is more than worth it. The reason we didn’t add value to this project is the problem it is about to solve for this community is unmeasurable.”
She continued: “Some said I wasn’t going to fulfill my promise because I am a politician. I have tried in my weak way that the promises I made be fulfilled, especially as a politician, not an ordinary politician. I am happy now that the community has water.”
She implored the community people to make sure that the facility is maintained regularly and properly.
“I always say I am a statesperson. I love Liberia. I love the people of Liberia, and so, whatever I do that will impact their lives in positive way, will make me happy,” she told them, and they heartedly cheered.
VP Taylor added that there is a Turkish company that does such work across Africa. “I met them in 2022 before the campaign and I worked with them to do several works across the country.”
For his part, the Chairman of the Cooper Farm Block-D Youth for Transformation (CFBDYT) ZiZi Howard lauded the former Vice President for the kind gesture, noting it takes a kindhearted person to fulfil their promises, especially after losing an election.
“In life, your word makes you a man or woman you are,” he said. “Because promise is a debt.”
He called specifically on politicians to learn to fulfil their promise to anybody and any community if they even lost an election.
“You see our mother standing by her word, especially as a mother, not only as politician,” he added.
Also speaking, one of the community dwellers identified as Ma Comfort said the modern water system is a total relief to the community, especially the women and children who go through a lot to fetch water for their homes.
“Madam Jewel Howard Taylor; you did extremely well for our community in coming to our aid and giving us access to safe drinking water. God will pay you back for your humanitarian work to provide water for hundreds of community dwellers,” she said.
