MONROVIA – As the end lingers, the hullaballoo between embattled House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and “regime speaker” Richard Koon, is picking up dust and mud, including rumor-mongering and other mischiefs, the latest been reports that that while the country’s High Court decision is in the offing, the two sides are negotiating a settlement through the Council of Elders. The Koffa bloc, which has opted for a logical, legal settlement, is not happy with the trending rumor, to which its offshoot, the Rule of Law Caucus, has taken exception, describing the reports false and misleading. The Analyst reports.
The Rule of Law Caucus of the House of Representatives wishes to categorically dispel rumors and misinformation circulating in the public regarding alleged negotiations involving the Caucus and the Majority Bloc.
In a press statement, the Caucus said, it had received reports suggesting that the Council of Chiefs and Elders (EDOs), under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, are facilitating negotiations, and that ongoing discussions are taking place between the Rule of Law Caucus, the Speaker, and members of the Majority Bloc.
“We want to make it absolutely clear that these claims are entirely false and misleading,” said the Koffa group. “At no point have the Speaker, Hon. J. Fonati Koffa, or any member of the Rule of Law Caucus engaged in discussions or negotiations with any group or political bloc regarding the current matter before the Supreme Court.”
The group, also called Minority Bloc, said: “Our position remains firm: we are awaiting the ruling of the Supreme Court, which is the final arbiter in this matter. This case is not about individuals — it is about the sanctity of our laws, the authority of our institutions, and the future of our democracy.”
The Koffa group urged the Liberian public and all stakeholders to remain calm, respect the judicial process, and reject any narrative that seeks to undermine the rule of law.
